The latest details for long-awaited Kingdom Hearts III have been revealed, following the D23 Expo that took place this past weekend at the Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan.
The devoted fan base of the RPG-action series, developed and published by Square Enix and Disney, has been holding its collective breath for an official release date since the title was originally announced at Sony’s E3 press briefing in 2013. While additional confirmations that a release was planned came in mid-2017 from sources close to the project, fans maintained a hopeful, yet cautious outlook on the game actually becoming available in 2018.
Following multiple screenshots and trailers of Kingdom Hearts III’s in-game footage from this past weekend’s Official Disney Fan Club event, it appears that fans can finally breathe out and be legitimately excited again for the latest installment in the series, slated for release later this year.

Players will once again take control of Sora, with companions Donald and Goofy, as they make their way through worlds both old and new, battling enemies for the greater good. Utada Hikaru, who provided music for Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, also returns to the saga in the newly released trailer featuring a new song titled “Don’t Think Twice”. A few of the notable new worlds that appear in the recent footage:
Monstropolis – Sora and companions transform into monsters and join the likes of Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan as they make their way through the world of Monsters, Inc., with an appearance from the ever-adorable Boo.
Toy Story – The group becomes moveable action figures, as they team up with Buzz Lightyear and Woody while interacting within a toy-inspired setting.
Tangled – No apparent physical changes are needed for the trio of characters in this new world, which highlights the usage of Rapunzel’s long hair during battle sequences.
Finally, we would be remiss not to mention the released image of Riku holding a new Keyblade; a design that has come with some slight, albeit hilarious, criticism, but also has many wondering if the new Keyblade may be related to a world within another Disney/Pixar movie, Cars.
Kingdom Hearts III is tentatively planned for release on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. While a non-specific release date of simply “2018” may feel too ambiguous to trust for fans that have been burned by failed promises in the past, the amount of official details emerging from Square Enix and Disney make it seem like the collaboration is too ingrained and invested in the project for either party to pull out at this point.
