Pokemon is a huge cultural landmark. It’s been around for over 25 years, sold millions of copies, spawned TV shows, movies, comics, and dozens of video games. Your grandma knows Pikachu, that’s how well known the franchise is. One dog-trainer has now introduced the pet show Crufts to it, by performing with her chihuahua, Sophie, as the Pokemon theme song played.

Trainer Jenny dressed up as – not Officer Jenny – but Ash Ketchum himself, with a blue jacket, gloves, and iconic cap. She gets Sophie to do tricks like running through her legs, hopping up onto her feet so she can walk with the dog on top of them, and getting her to hop up on her back, like Ash’s Pikachu does in the anime.

Sure, Sophie can’t breathe fire or read minds or shoot leaves from her back, but it’s pretty impressive nonetheless. The routine was spotted by Eurogamer, and done as part of the Freestyle Heelwork to Music Competition. Their segment starts at 16:30.

Sophie and Jenny put on quite the show! Sophie ferociously takes down a Charizard (cardboard cut out) in battle and stands atop its corpse, and also helps flush a Bulbasaur (plushie) out of some tall grass so that Jenny can capture it.

Similar ethical questions can be raised when looking at either Crufts or Pokemon. Is it right to make these extraordinary animals dance for our amusement? Well, dogs are real, and Pokemon, unfortunately, still aren’t, so the comparison isn’t that similar, but you get the gist.

Unfortunately, just like Ash, she didn’t win the show, but she tried her very best. Maybe dressing up as Officer Jenny and Growlithe the cop dog would have gotten them some more points. But then, who wants to dress their dog up as a cop. Even a cute cop is still a cop.

In other Pokemon news, an hour-long episode of Pokemon Journeys is set to air to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the anime. A fan of the games has also recreated the Pokedex from Legends: Arceus. Finally, people in South Korea are excited for the return of Pokemon bread.
