Chocobo GP is the follow-up to Chocobo Racing, a Final Fantasy spin-off title that launched for the PlayStation in 1999. That’s right, it’s been over 20 years since we last went racing with our yellow buddy, so it’s time to make up for that now. Grab your Nintendo Switch, it’s time to race.

If you’re ready to hit the racetrack and reunite with your favorite feathered friend in Chocobo GP, as well as a few other familiar faces, here are some top tips to help you get started and help you ensure you cross that finish line first.

Use ZL Instead Of Y For Your Abilities

You’ll quickly be introduced to how to use your character’s ability in the game — pressing Y. Now that’s not the most convenient button while trying to pay attention to winning the race, but fortunately, there’s an alternative. By default, ZL is also an ability button and is much easier to tap while you’re zooming around the track. We recommend using this instead.

Magic Eggs Aren’t Colored By Rarity

Chocobo GP Beginner Tips

As you race around the track, there are Magic Eggs for you to swoop through and collect to give you some much-needed Magicite power-ups or Crystals. You’d be forgiven for thinking that these copper, silver, and gold eggs affect drop rates, for instance, gold giving you the best chance of a decent Magicite — but that’s actually not the case.

It’s true that Gold has the best offering as it gives you two instead of one power-up, but for strategic racing, you should be aware of what each egg offers.

Magicite Can Stack To Create More Powerful Effects

Chocobo GP Beginner Tips

Now it’s time to talk about that strategic racing we were on about. You see, Magicite and Crystals can stack. Not only can you hold three at a time, but if you have three of the same Magicite, it will improve the effectiveness of the power-up. For example, with the Fire Magicite, once you have two it becomes Fira, and with three it becomes Firaga.

The Magicite display at the top left of the screen will change to reflect this. Ideally, you want to get a gold egg to grab two of a kind, then a silver egg next to get the best version of whichever Magicite you have grabbed.

Collect Crystals For A Speed Boost And Tickets

Chocobo GP Beginner Tips

You’ll notice Crystals scattered around tracks, as well as sometimes receiving them from Magic Eggs, but what exactly do they do? Collecting crystals increases your Ability Gauge a bit, but also, if you have a stack of ten Crystals in your possession, your speed will increase. Those are two solid reasons to grab every crystal you see. Be warned, if you get hit by an attack, you will lose your crystals and have to start collecting them all over again.

Collecting Crystals will also fill your Crystal Gauge, which, when full, will give you a ticker to use in the Ticket Shop.

You Can Benefit From Rival’s Abilities And Magicite

Chocobo GP Beginner Tips

You can take advantage of some of your rivals’ abilities and Magicite. For example, Camilla’s little flowery speed hoops that give her a boost from driving through them? You can get a speed boost from those too. If someone else creates a Swap portal — you can drive through too!

Just bear in mind, you can accidentally drive into their red portal and throw yourself backward, so don’t do that. It also means that depending on the ability or Magicite you use, your rivals can also take advantage of yours too.

Keep To The Side Of The Track When Warnings Appear

Chocobo GP Beginner Tips

When one of your arrivals is about to unleash an attack — either an ability or a Magicite attack — you’ll get a warning if you are in close proximity. This appears at the bottom of the screen as an exclamation mark icon. A yellow icon shows a Magicite attack is coming, while a red icon shows a character attack is coming.

Whenever you see a warning appear, you should slide on over to the edge of the track, as this is usually the best way to avoid most incoming attacks.

MBarrier Doesn’t Protect You From Character Abilities

Chocobo GP Beginner Tips

Of course, there are going to be plenty of times when sliding to the side of the track to avoid an attack will cost you precious seconds you need to stay in the lead, but that’s where MBarrier comes in. This Magicite protects you from a single Magicite attack while active, though it doesn’t last long. However, be warned that MBarrier does not protect you from character ability attacks.

Make The Most Of Drifting And Air Tricks

The game will teach you on your very first race that drifting around corners will give you a much-needed speed boost. However, this isn’t the only way to get a little boost — Air Tricks have the same effect.

While going through a jump zone — whenever you jump off a ramp or jump from one part of the track to another — you can hit R to do an Air Trick, causing your character to do a little pose. When they land, they’ll have a little boost to help them speed along for a short time.
