Chris Evan jokes about a possible Captain America and Human Torch buddy film, in light of the nearly-complete Disney and Fox deal.

Chris Evans has a funny movie pitch involving two of his superhero roles – Captain America and Human Torch – in light of the sales talks between Disney and Fox that could lead to Marvel Studio regaining the Fantastic Four movie rights. Now best known as the (almost) always morally right Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans first tried his luck in the superhero genre by playing Johnny Storm in 20th Century Fox’s 2005 F4 movie. The film also starred Ioan Gruffudd (Reed Richards), Jessica Alba (Sue Storm), Michael Chiklis (Ben Grimm), and Julian McMahon (Victor Von Doom), but was far from the typical MCU-level of critical/commercial success.

Disney is now actively in talks with Fox to acquire 21st Century Fox’s movie and TV divisions, for an estimated cost of $60 billion. The deal would include Fox’s A&E and Star TV networks and its regional sports operation, as well as stakes in both Sky and Hulu. However, for Marvel fans who have been wanting to see the Fantastic Four and X-Men finally rub elbows with the Guardians of the Galaxy on the big screen, this deal is big news for an entirely different reason.

Evans took to his official Twitter account to suggest an idea of what could be a Captain America and Human Torch movie. In his tweet (which is embedded below), Evans even jokingly asked who he can directly talk to regarding this. Fans quickly got onboard with his pitch, some of them suggesting that Cap’s loyal sidekicks, Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) also join in the fun. Ant-Man director Peyton Reed has even offered to call the shots, via his own Twitter account.

So who do I talk to about a Cap/Human Torch buddy comedy spin-off? I’m thinking Planes, Trains and Automobiles meets Parent Trap. https://t.co/3KRPZOVzq2

Obviously, this is a joke but for the sake of letting our imaginations run wild, let’s imagine what it would take for such a project to even happen. The next two Avengers movies will serve as the final chapter for certain MCU superheroes, and Evans’ Steve Rogers is certainly on the list of candidates susceptible to biting the bullet. Moreover, at the earliest, the Fantastic Four wouldn’t be able to join the MCU until Phase 4 – a time in which Steve Rogers will likely no longer part of the franchise. All the same though, it’s a funny idea floated by the actor.

Assuming Disney does strike a deal with Fox, it’s still unclear how the X-Men and the Fantastic Four would fit into the MCU blueprint. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has revealed that there are already 20 MCU films planned after Phase 3 is done, though he has yet to reveal what any of those movies would be. Granted that Feige was made aware of a potential Disney/Fox deal before the new came public, it’s possible that the X-Men and F4 properties have already been taken into consideration when it comes to the MCU’s future. Marvel Studios also has the rights to 7,000 characters, which doesn’t exactly help to further narrow down what to expect from Phase 4, as currently planned.

The Disney/Fox deal is reportedly almost done and an announcement on the matter could be arriving as soon as next week. Assuming that’s correct, then Feige and his collaborators may well be tweaking the roadmap for the MCU’s future to include the X-Men and F4 as we speak. More on this as it develops.

Accidental movie fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing several years back and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate young writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for The Lion King, old songs, and home design; is currently obsessed with old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!); and won’t dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
