Cinderella is getting another adaptation this year, and here is how and where audiences can watch the film upon release. Written and directed by Kay Cannon, this modern take on Cinderella is a musical adaptation featuring Camila Cabello, Frozen’s Idina Menzel, Pierce Brosnan, and many more. The film has been through an ever-changing release schedule due to the ongoing pandemic, having been delayed a few times after production initially shut down in March 2020 before resuming later that year in August.

Following Ella (better known as Cinderella) in her ambitions to leave behind her stepmother’s basement to become a well-known fashion designer, Cinderella offers a few twists on the classic story, one that borrows from other adaptations, including Ever After, Ella Enchanted, and 1997’s Cinderella starring Brandy and Whitney Houston. Cabello, already an established singer, and the rest of the cast sing a combination of original songs written for the film and popular music from various genres, including Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation.”

2021’s Cinderella was originally scheduled for release by Sony before Amazon Studios bought the film. Now in charge of its release, Cinderella is in a unique situation because it will be made available to watch in select theaters and it will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video beginning Friday, September 3, 2021. With regards to when the musical can be watched on Amazon Prime, the streamer’s films are typically released at 12:00 a.m. GMT on Fridays, which is 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT. the day before for those living in North America.

In Cinderella’s case, many viewers will be able to watch the movie on the evening of Thursday, September 2; it’ll be the same for the select theater release as movies begin playing at around 7:00 p.m. ET on the Thursday night of its release weekend. Regardless of exact times, however, Cinderella will be available in theaters and on the streaming platform on Friday, September 3 everywhere. Cinderella’s release gives audiences more options to see the film, whether they’re willing to go to a theater or watch it from the comfort of their own homes.

This release plan is similar to what Disney did with Jungle Cruise and Black Widow, with a simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ streaming release, as well as what Warner Bros. has been doing with its films this year with its theater/HBO Max release setup, which has included In the Heights and The Suicide Squad. It remains to be seen how well Cinderella will do with this dual release model numbers-wise, but time will tell. Until then, viewers can sit back and enjoy Cinderella on the big screen and small with an Amazon Prime subscription.
