Battlefield 2042 appears to be trying very hard to deliver on the promise that Portal is a love letter to Battlefield fans, though what next maps it may get is still a matter of speculation. Not only is 2042 going to deliver new content of unprecedented size for the series, it’s also bringing classic content, remade, with the addition of custom game modes through Portal. When 2042 launches in October, Portal will come with content from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3. The expectation upon Portal’s potential success is the continued release of more classic maps, leading fans to wonder what might be in the pipeline.

Battlefield has a long history with dozens of maps to choose from out of its several different eras. A few fan favorites are already confirmed to be in Portal’s launch line up of classic maps, but there are a few that have been remastered in the past that are noticeably missing. 1942’s Wake Island could be considered Battlefield’s flagship map, appearing in numerous games throughout the series. In fact, there are more Battlefield games with a version of Wake Island than there are without. Battlefield 2 also has a couple maps that have recurred in later games, Strike at Karkand and Gulf of Oman. BF3 had a version of both of these.

These three maps – Wake Island, Strike at Karkand, and Gulf of Oman – stand out from the crowd as the most obvious to be added to Portal for two reasons. The first is that the past remasters of these maps makes them familiar to many Battlefield fans. The second is that a version of them already exists in the Battlefield games remastered for Portal. Following the launch of Battlefield 2042, it seems more likely that Ripple Effect, developers of Portal, would continue working on the games already added instead of pivoting to including more.

Other Classic Maps That Could Come To Battlefield Portal

If 2042’s Portal does indeed start its post-launch content with more maps from the three games already included, Battlefield 1942 seems the most poised to deliver compelling maps. Aside from the exciting prospect of more 1942 maps being updated with destruction, there’s a chance to fill the World War II inspired void left by Battlefield V. 1942 has some maps that are based on iconic WWII battles, such as Omaha Beach, Operation Market Garden, and Iwo Jima.

Portal could potentially bring about a resurgence for Rush, a game mode seemingly forgotten by the most recent Battlefield games. Bad Company 2 maps like Atacama Desert and Port Valdez are enticing options that could also be used for Breakthrough, a game mode that has seemingly replaced Rush. In addition to BF3 having newer versions of classic BF2 maps, it also has a couple good options to bring strictly urban warfare to Portal, something missing in the first six maps. Seine Crossing would let players fight through the streets of Paris, while Operation Metro would provide a so-called meat grinder map, which seems like a missing ingredient in the chaotic gameplay Portal is sure to deliver.

There are, of course, plenty of other Battlefield games with maps that could be remastered for Portal, like Camp Gibraltar and Suez Canal from Battlefield 2142, or BF4’s Siege of Shanghai and Hainan Resort. No matter what maps the developers choose to add, there will almost certainly be dissenting opinions. As for what maps are coming next, though, it seems most safe to assume Battlefield 2042’s Portal will add ones from the games already part of the mode.
