A game studio whose works are inspired by 1980’s VHS-era horror films and the survival horror games of the 1990’s has given DOOM the Silent Hill/Resident Evil treatment in a new video. Before Resident Evil 4 attempted to re-imagine the genre with an extra dose of action and a greater focus on combat in the early 2000’s, survival horror games were perhaps the ultimate example of atmospheric horror in a visual medium that wasn’t film or television. The golden age of survival horror came in the late 1990’s, specifically on the PlayStation with the aforementioned series, as well as titles like Clock Tower and the RPG-infused Parasite Eve.

DOOM eventually took inspiration from the genre as well when id Software incorporated some survival horror elements into DOOM 3, but the experiment was largely considered a misfire by gamers and critics. However, a 30-second clip posted earlier this week gives the first-person shooter classic the original PS1-style survival horror remix fans never knew they needed.

The original DOOM’s transformation into a video mimicking the golden age of survival horror style is the work of indie developer Puppet Combo/Ben Cocuzza, who posted the video recently on Twitter. Its creator has confirmed to Screen Rant that it’s only a video, and no accompanying game is currently in the works, but it is nonetheless making a splash on social media, with over 23,000 likes and thousands of retweets at the time of this writing. The video comes on the heels of DOOM Eternal’s release for PC, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia and Xbox One on March 20, with a Nintendo Switch port still planned for some point in the future.

In addition to creating a pitch-perfect video of DOOM as classic survival horror, Puppet Combo (formerly known as Pig Farmer Games) has done well for itself in creating low-cost, low-budget games that hearken back to earlier eras of horror gaming. Titles like Babysitter Bloodbath have provided fertile ground for jump scares and steady doses of nostalgia for streamers, longtime genre fans, and younger gamers alike, and the company’s newest title is currently available on Puppet Combo’s Patreon.

Without question, Puppet Combo hit the nail on the head with this new representation of id’s classic first-person shooter. From the tonal music, the door-opening animations, and menu screen, to the sense of foreboding in what is largely an empty world, it does exactly the same things to the viewer that Resident Evil, Silent Hill and others did when they brought survival horror to the forefront for gamers in the 1990’s. The fact that it maintains the pixelated, 32-bit presentation only adds to DOOM’s survival horror authenticity. For gamers of a certain age, this is truly creepy stuff.
