Paramount Pictures heralded Clifford The Big Red Dog’s November 10 release date by premiering its final full-length trailer this morning. A teaser came out back in June, but the film has since undergone some schedule shuffling due to concerns about the Delta variant of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, though, fans can fully embrace the heartwarming experience of meeting Clifford for the first time in a trailer that highlights the sense of belonging and community that have been present in his stories since Norman Bridwell created the character in 1963.

The latest iteration of the beloved Scholastic icon takes place in present-day New York City, where young Emily Elizabeth (Darby Camp, Big Little Lies) lives with her mother in a small apartment. The hum-drum of her daily life and growing feelings of isolation are interrupted by a chance encounter with a strange man named Mr. Bridwell (played by the legendary John Cleese), who introduces her to a tiny red pup that fascinates her. His ominous response to the question of how large the dog would get – “That depends on how much you love him” – begins to take shape when Emily wakes up to her new best friend nearly the size of her room.

Aside from an updated setting and special effects, the newest adaptation of Clifford The Big Red Dog offers yet another addition: Jack Whitehall, who recently had audiences cracking up in Jungle Cruise, in the role of Uncle Casey. Though he is not Emily Elizabeth’s primary guardian, he is a huge influence in her life and his feelings about Clifford will play a large part in how the young girl can move forward with her new oversized companion. While the trailer is understandably full of wacky hijinks and the mystical properties of Clifford himself, the live-action adaptation is also very much steeped in realism. Between visits to a very confused vet (and isn’t it fun to see that cameo from Kenan Thompson?) and real-time social media and news reactions from onlookers, it’s clear that Clifford’s condition will have real-world consequences and explore a wide spectrum of community responses from adoration to terror. But the heart of the story is clearly the bonds between Emily Elizabeth, Uncle Casey, and the lovable Clifford himself.

In a recent event promoting the trailer release, Camp and Whitehall shared the aspects that made them most excited to participate in the film. The young Camp had grown up with an awareness of the Big Red Dog novels and animated series, explaining that, “I always was drawn to the idea of playing her, because she’s a fun-loving, creative young girl.” Meanwhile, Whitehall is known for his humor and admitted that was part of the appeal. “I get to flex my comedy chops and have lots of opportunities for hijinks and physical comedy. But also, [Casey] has a heart of gold and has a really nice arc over the course of the movie.”
