Do the garden and shut up, Cody.

Dr Hakim, the anthropomorphic book from It Takes Two, is currently leading the race for 2021’s best new character. This is unfortunately offset by Cody, one of the two player characters in Hazelight’s latest game, who is currently lagging behind as the worst. Seriously Cody, shut the fuck up and get a job.

It Takes Two revolves around two parents going through a divorce. In terms of themes, it’s a mixed bag. It refuses to play anything straight, and seems to imply that divorce is caused by bad people not trying hard enough at a relationship, rather than acknowledging the reality that some people don’t belong together forever. It’s also somewhat progressive in its two leads; the mother is the breadwinner (an engineer too), while Cody is the stay at home dad. But it still uses the well worn ‘dad is the fun parent’ motif, with boring May ruining everything with her womanly boringness. That’s why it’s very hard to ever root for Cody, but when we reach the garden, things get so much worse.

It turns out that Cody’s passion in life is gardening. You’d be forgiven for thinking he doesn’t have one, because despite the fact he stays at home all day, their daughter is old enough to be at school, and they live in a huge house with a big garden thanks exclusively to May’s salary, Cody does no gardening. It has been overrun, sabotaged by moles, and transformed into a mess of overgrown weeds and pests.

The reason it has been overrun like this? Cody doesn’t feel like May supported him. She didn’t bully him, or belittle him, or pour salt on the soil, he just had a bit of a feeling that she wasn’t praising him enough for his hard work, so he quit, and decided instead to do… nothing. May works every day at a very stressful job, and you sit on the couch doing nothing. Your kid is healthy and she’s at school – it’s not up to your wife to make sure you get off your arse to do a bit of gardening. It Takes Two does make it clear in the end that it’s Cody’s fault, not May’s, that the garden fell into disrepair, but it doesn’t go nearly hard enough for my liking.

It’s not only ridiculous for Cody to suggest that May, who is out at work all day while he stays at home and does nothing, is to blame for his lack of ambition, it’s further evidence they are completely incompatible for the long term. I have no problem with stay at home dads; in fact, I think it’s great that we’re getting a stay at home dad in a game like this where it’s just accepted as normal – because it is normal. But if he feels so unfulfilled at home, go out and do something with your life. Go and work at a garden centre or a community club. Do some volunteer work around town that focuses on gardening. Or just go into your own damn garden and stop blaming your wife for everything. Arsehole.

The worst part is that this section is followed by May’s passion – singing. May gave up her dreams to be a professional singer in order to become an engineer and raise her daughter. Dreams are nice and all, but you can’t eat dreams. May giving up hers for the good of the family is nowhere near equivalent to Cody getting grumpy and deciding he’s not going to garden anymore because May didn’t come home from her eight-hour shift and complement his azaleas.

He’s vaguely likeable at times, but that’s what makes Cody so annoying. He’s the fun parent, and the game is keen to present him as that, when actually, he’s not doing anything like his better half. I’m glad we’re seeing a proper portrayal of stay at home parents in games, but next time, can we have one who isn’t so whiny?
