The early years of the classic real-time strategy series can finally be played in glorious 4K resolution now that Command & Conquer: Remastered has finally been released on Steam.

The game, which went live on Friday morning, includes the full releases of Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer: Red Alert, along with all the expansion packs for both titles.

The remaster is still in 2D, but it includes a heavily-increased resolution for both the gameplay and its revolutionary (for the time) use of FMV for its between-mission cutscenes. While it certainly maintains the basic feel of the original, players who don’t like the new, sleeker look have the option to switch back to the game’s original, low-resolution graphics. Publisher Electronic Arts even released a tool a few months back that shows off the differences in style.

The remaster also rebuilt the game’s multiplayer modes for modern audiences, along with the game’s UI. It also includes modding support, unreleased FMV footage, and remastered music by composer Frank Klepacki.

The game was developed by Petroglyph Games, a studio made up of former Westwood Studios developers who decided to go off and do their own thing after Electronic Arts dissolved the company. The studio itself has had some success through the years, both by working with other publishers on games such as Star Wars: Empire at War and Conan Unconquered, and by creating some in-house titles such as 8-Bit Armies and the upcoming Earthbreakers. However, as a studio with limited funding, they never quite reached the level of success they had during their glory days.

Re-partnering with Electronic Arts may just be a step in the right direction for Petroglyph, especially if the remastered edition finds success among a broader audience. Who knows, we may see a remaster of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun and Command & Conquer: Red Alert II – or even a new entry into the Command & Conquer series.

We’ll just have to wait to find out.
