Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) was a core member of the Greendale Spanish study group in the hit sitcom series Community — how did his story end? After numerous cancellations and revivals, the Dan Harmon series Community aired its sixth and final season on the short-lived Yahoo! Screen service in 2015. By the final season, only 5 of the original 8 main cast members remained; McHale, who served as the plot’s main focus in Community’s original premiere, fittingly played a key role in the final episode as well.

Season 6 of Community saw several changes to the show’s format: in addition to having longer episodes, season 6 also saw the loss of Yvette Nicole Brown, who payed Shirley Bennett. Given that Donald Glover, who played Troy Barnes, left the series in the previous season, and Chevy Chase, who played Pierce Hawthorne, left in season 4, season 6 required the addition of new cast members to make up the difference: consultant Francesca “Frankie” Dart (Paget Brewster) and inventor Elroy Patashnik (Keith David).

The final episode of Community saw further changes to the group’s dynamic. In season 5, the study group — no longer necessary since its members were no longer students — became the “Save Greendale Committee.” Largely a meta-joke (referencing the show’s need to be “saved”), the purpose of the committee was to “save Greendale,” which involved tasks as mundane as catching the “Ass Crack Bandit,” and as serious as preventing the school from being sold to the restaurant chain Subway. Season 6 continued the format — but by the end of the finale, Jeff says goodbye to two other original study group members who are moving on from Greendale.

In the series finale, many of the Save Greendale Committee members leave, moving on to new things. Elroy takes a job at LinkedIn, Abed moves to Los Angeles to take a job as a production assistant on a Fox TV series, and Annie accepts a summer internship with the FBI. Jeff is upset by the change, and admits to his fear that he will be left alone at Greendale. The episode ends on a bittersweet note, with the group sharing their feelings for each other and accepting that it was time to move on. Community’s series finale is one of the best in recent TV history because of its willingness to balance closure with poignancy.

Jeff Winger began his journey at Greendale pursuing a fast degree so that he could be reinstated as a lawyer. He obtained that degree at the end of season 4, but in season 5 returned to Greendale and took a position teaching Law at the school. By the final episode of Community, Jeff — in many ways — is a changed man: although he still shows signs of abandonment issues and occasional vanity, he’s learned how to let people into his life in a meaningful way. The final scene shows him sitting at the local bar, the Vatican, surrounded by the remaining members of the committee he founded. The group is Jeff’s de facto Greendale family, and although its membership has, and will change, Jeff has learned to embrace it for what it is — he’s found his home.
