Cooking Mama: Cookstar is coming out for the Nintendo Switch and will release with an interesting Instagram-like food photography mode in March 2020 with a $39.99 price tag. The game has experienced a long period of silence following a delay, having been first announced in February of 2019 and scheduled for release that fall, as well as a re-branding from the name Cooking Mama: Coming Home to Mama.
The cooking simulator franchise debuted in 2006 as Cooking Mama for the original Nintendo DS. The game teaches players how to prepare various dishes from their countries of origin in the form of mini-games for each step in the cooking process. The majority of entries in the Cooking Mama series use touch controls on the portable DS/3DS systems, while the console spin-offs utilize motion controls to simulate actions of peeling, chopping, stirring, and much more. Photo filter effects and stickers like on Instagram can be added to the final result. The fun, pantomimed motion controls of the Switch seem to add a refreshing twist to the mini-games. In one instance, players must tilt a pan to fry its disparate ingredients at their correct temperatures represented by meters ranging from red frown faces to blue happy faces. Another shows a bar at the bottom of the screen with actions and their corresponding inputs scrolling along with time constraints like a rhythm game.
Something that wasn’t showcased in the discovered trailer was a reference to Planet Entertainment’s usage of blockchain in Cooking Mama: Cookstar. This was first mentioned in a press release last year, which has since been removed from the company’s website. They touted that “Each purchased copy of the game will have unique IDs which will be managed directly through the game’s internal wallet storage.” Not much information has been confirmed as to how they plan on using blockchain, if they will implement cryptocurrency in an online multiplayer economy, and how this could influence outside investors. Additionally, a feature that was also mentioned at this time was a vegetarian mode. This mode would allow players to explore a wide array of recipes free of all things meat.
The Switch is the perfect console for this title and franchise, and the addition of the food photography feature is brilliant. The rise of foodies and the massive trend in popular culture of food photography across social media platforms is prolific. This addition isn’t just a smart move from a marketing perspective, but a great marker in history for this time in technology and culture. Since the implementation of motion controls is at the crux of the gameplay, it has yet to be confirmed how Cooking Mama: Cookstar will handle the fixed controls of the Switch Lite. Will they develop a mode where players of the Lite can use touch controls reminiscent of the Nintendo DS and 3DS eras, or will they allow for external motion controls to be connected? Regardless, this title is sure to serve up the tastiest version yet of the tried and true Cooking Mama recipe that fans know and love.
