Now that trading and friendship – long desired features – have been added to Pokemon GO, some fans may be wondering how these social features will develop from here. One dedicated player of the mobile ARG believes the “natural progression” of the trading and friendship system is the implementation of secret bases, a popular social feature first introduced in the Gen 3 core titles that allowed players to customize an area based on personal taste and preference.

Secret bases, in gen 6, allowed other players worldwide to view a secret base through a QR code, so it would be logical for this fan-favorite feature to find its way into Pokemon GO. The mastermind behind the secret bases idea, Venasto1se, even went as far as to design a conceptual mechanic based on the way they think it could work.

Of course, before moving on, this is simple speculation, as Niantic has given no statement concerning the further development of the recently added social features. However, Venasto1se theorizes that a player’s personal base could be entered through the character screen, which changes the overworld map into a base mode map. From there, other players could enter a base at a certain level of proximity and friendship, in a similar manner that trading works. Check out some images of the concept below:

Then, decorations (such as the dolls and posters in the core game seen below) for a player’s base could be earned through medals, gifts, microtransactions, or events, and speculatively, a base could be marked with a flag (seen below) that could be captured to increase friendship gain and award more decorations. Sample flags could be team-based (Valor, Mystic, Instinct), Antagonists (Rocket, Magma, Aqua), or Country of Origin. With the popularity of Pokemon GO at its height, this feature may very well help the longevity of the game and its friendship system.

While this is currently just a fan concept, Niantic is pretty good at listening to its fan base, so if it proves to be popular enough, perhaps it could happen one day. It wouldn’t likely be soon, however, as a recent datamine has uncovered new Pokemon GO additions, including standard and shiny forms of Celebi, the next legendary to feature in a special research quest coming to the game.

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions for Android and iOS devices.
