Could Pokemon GO Turn All Pokestops into Gyms?

A theory surfaces online, suggesting the reason why Pokemon GO’s PokeStops are only dropping two items now is down to Niantic’s decision to turn them into Gyms instead.

As Pokemon GO players continue to experience the strange glitch that only provides two items out of PokeStops, users online begin to speculate as to whether this new change is intentional and a sign that Niantic will be making some changes to the item-dropping locations. A post from Reddit user Chrossom on the Pokemon GO subreddit puts forward the idea that the developer might be looking to change all PokeStops into Gyms in the near future.

The user believes that hybrid PokeStop/Gyms coming to Pokemon GO may be more likely than the glitch still not being fixed after several weeks of notoriety. In fact, as of lately, more and more players are only receiving two items from PokeStops, causing more reliance on actual Gyms to gather items in-game. This puts more focus on the Gym system as trainers will have to level up locations in order to properly profit from them, but ‘GymStops’ would allow for faster item gathering as players visit them on a regular basis.

The reasoning behind this theory comes from Niantic’s previous game Ingress, which only uses one type of building in the game – Portals. Each Portal in Ingress behaves like a Pokemon GO Gym, and there are a lot more Portals than PokeStops. It could be that the developer is looking to make the Pokemon GO experience more similar to that of Ingress, but there are certainly some flaws in the theory.

Chrossom outlines some of the difficulties that both Niantic and players would face, should this new system come into reality. Firstly, an abundance of Gyms would not only look strange, but it’d prove to be a large drain on phone batteries as each controlling Pokemon begins to render on the map.

Having a Gym on every street corner would also likely make it too easy for trainers to place their Pokemon at the locations, removing any real competition from the Gym system. This would prove bad for Niantic too, as the developer would make less money from micro-transactions when players could simply buy all the supplies they needed with generated currency.

Ultimately, it doesn’t seem likely that the PokeStop system will be seeing these sorts of changes, but it does feel like some update is coming, given that the two item issue is becoming increasingly more prevalent. Other users have suggested that perhaps PokeStops are being nerfed permanently as more locations get added to the game, allowing more rural players to join in the Pokemon GO experience.

Given that lately a few new PokeStops appeared in locations where there hadn’t been one prior, only to be quickly removed again, it’s possible that Niantic has plans to release a new wave of item-dropping locations in the future, but for now only time will tell.

Pokemon GO is out now on Android and iOS devices.
