A new Cowboy Bebop behind-the-scenes video offers a look at original composer Yoko Kanno’s return for Netflix’s live-action adaptation. Kanno served as the composer on the original anime series and was part of the creative team behind the iconic genre title. The Seatbelts frontwoman was credited as a creator alongside director Shinichirō Watanabe, screenwriter Keiko Nobumoto, character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto and mechanical designer Kimitoshi Yamanae, all of whom were billed under the pseudonym Hajime Yatate.

Cowboy Bebop is set in the year 2071 and centers on bounty hunters Spike Spiegel, Jet Black and Faye Valentine as they venture through the galaxy on the titular starship hunting down targets and facing the demons from their past. The cast for Netflix’s live-action adaptation is led by John Cho as Spike, Mustafa Shakir as Jet, Daniela Pineda as Faye, Elena Satine as Julia and Alex Hassell as Vicious. Following delays in production due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Cho suffering an injury on-set early into filming, Cowboy Bebop is finally coming to Netflix on November 19.

With just a few days remaining until the show’s premiere, Netflix has debuted a new Cowboy Bebop BTS video. The featurette offers a look at original anime composer Yoko Kanno’s return for the live-action series, the development of music for the Netflix adaptation and teases of new music developed for the show. The announcement that Yoko Kanno would return to compose the score for the live-action Cowboy Bebop left many audiences excited at the show’s potential to recapture the spirit of the original anime. Cho has even discussed in the lead up to the show’s release how important it was to him that Kanno was attached to return as the composer before he signed on to star as Spike. The Cowboy Bebop BTS video is sure to entice longtime fans of the franchise with the sight of Kanno and the Seatbelts performing the original theme song, “Tank!,” as well as a new take on the closing credits track “The Real Folk Blues.”

It’s also interesting to note that Kanno reveals in the Cowboy Bebop BTS video that she only used one-tenth of the anime’s score for the live-action series. With the main soundtrack for the Cowboy Bebop anime already featuring over an hour of music, it should be interesting to see what Kanno pulled from the original alongside “Tank!” and “The Real Folk Blues” and what new tracks she created for the adaptation. Only time will tell when Cowboy Bebop premieres on Netflix on November 19.
