The team-based shooter Crucible is seeing an interesting setback as it returns to a closed beta despite having an official full release in May.

Relentless Studios made the announcement on the game’s site Tuesday morning. According to the developers they recognize there is something lacking from the game and are going to closed beta to “make the game better”. They’ve stated that based on their observations and player feedback that they’ve noticed some issues and steps they can take to improve the game.

The news that Crucible is struggling isn’t all that surprising. Initial reviews of the game stated that while fun it felt like there certain features and pieces of content missing. It also didn’t help that it has a steeper learning curve than most games in the genre.

There’s also the argument that it’s trying to stand out in an already saturated market. Some playersthat may be interested in Crucible simply may not feel like they have the time or dedication to start yet another free-to-play shooter. Especially when it has a learning curve some players aren’t willing to climb.

Regardless, Relentless Studios has noticed the response and is looking to fix that. During closed beta, they’ll be hosting time to play alongside the players to get more hands-on experience with the issues. They’re also forming a “community council” comprised of beta players from casual gamers to hardcore players to provide feedback and act as mediaries for the fanbase.

The hands-on attention and engagement with the fans is a great sign and not something that happens very often in the gaming sphere these days. That being said, pushing the game back into closed beta after a release certainly looks bad and may dissuade future players from giving the game a try whenever it releases again.

If done swiftly and carefully Relentless Studios could very well pull a rabbit out of their hat and make the game into something really special that rivals other titans of the genre. But if they’re not careful they could spend a lot of time and energy devoted to a project many players will likely never give a second chance to.
