The first look at Netflix’s Cuphead reveals that the series has cast Wayne Brady as King Dice. Released in 2017, Cuphead is originally a run and gun video game inspired by the rubber hose style of cartoons popularized by animator Max Fleischer and Walt Disney during the 1920s and 1930s. From Studio MDHR, the game quickly became popular not only for its nostalgic animation style but for the game’s brutal difficulty as well. With the game’s titular protagonist and his brother Mugman as its playable characters, Cuphead quickly caught on with gamers who enjoy a real challenge.

In 2019, it was announced that Netflix Animation was adapting Cuphead into a cartoon series, and with the help of the game’s developer Studio MDHR, it would maintain its old-school cartoon aesthetic. However, to some fan’s disappointment, the show would be created using digital animation rather than hand-drawn. While the game follows two anthropomorphic cups, Cuphead and Mugman, as they embark on a journey that includes a series of different levels and boss fights in order to repay a debt to the devil, there is no indication the series will stay true to this story. Instead, the series will tell an original story involving the same two protagonists and setting.

Now, during Netflix’s Geeked Week, the first look at their upcoming Cuphead series has been revealed. Officially titled The Cuphead Show!, the series has cast the Whose Line Is It Anyway? star Wayne Brady as the voice of the antagonist King Dice. To go along with Brady, the series also features Tru Valentino as Cuphead, Frank Todaro as Mugman, and Luke Millington-Drake as the Devil. The voice cast’s newest member can be heard in the first teaser trailer for The Cuphead Show! below:

Based on this first trailer, it looks like Cuphead’s old-timey animation style translates flawlessly to the screen for a cartoon, which was wholly expected. Brady also seems like the perfect casting for King Dice. In the popular game, King Dice is one of many bosses that Cuphead and Mugman encounter along their journey. As he is the manager of the Devil’s Casino, the two protagonists must defeat King Dice before they are permitted entrance.

Cuphead is one of many Netflix series based on a popular video game getting updates during Geeked Week. A Castlevania spinoff was just announced, and the cast for their live-action Resident Evil series was also unveiled. Television and film adaptations of video games have had a terrible reputation in the past, and it looks like Netflix is doing everything it can to shed this notoriety. Hopefully, it starts with Cuphead.
