Richard Lewis announced recently that, due to a couple of surgeries, he won’t be able to appear in the upcoming 11th season of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm alongside his childhood friend Larry David and the rest of the show’s cast. And that’s a real shame because Lewis is one of the series’ most beloved and integral characters.

But while Lewis will be missed, the show has plenty of other great characters. Assuming major players like Leon, Jeff, and Susie are a given, there are a handful of other Curb stars that fans would love to see in the new season.

10 Lewis Will Be Missed: He’s One Of Larry’s Greatest Foils

Larry David has surrounded himself with hilarious foils on Curb with whom he shares fantastic chemistry, like Jeff Garlin and J.B. Smoove, to make the show’s improvised scenes pop.

Richard Lewis has always been one of Larry’s greatest foils. Having been friends since childhood, the two don’t pull any punches in arguments, and in the context of the show, it’s always hysterical.

9 Hope To See: Ted Danson

Ted Danson initially offered to play himself on Curb because he thought the pilot was bad and he’d be doing Larry a favor. Cut to two decades later and the show is still on the air.

Danson’s arguments with Larry on the show are always hysterical, whether they’re bickering about anonymous charity or a piece of pie, and it would be a joy to see him return in season 11.

8 Lewis Will Be Missed: It Won’t Be The Same Show Without Him

It simply won’t be the same show without Lewis. Funkhouser’s absence was felt in season 10 following Bob Einstein’s passing because he was a huge part of what made Curb feel like Curb.

The same goes for Lewis, going back to Curb’s pilot episode “The Pants Tent,” and it won’t feel quite like Curb without him. Thankfully, we’re only losing Lewis to surgery.

7 Hope To See: Cheryl David

Since Larry and Cheryl got a divorce in season 8, the two have remained friends. Arguably, as Cheryl has started dating Ted Danson, her interactions with Larry have become even funnier than when they were married.

Cheryl Hines is perfectly attuned to Curb’s style, knowing exactly how to bring up plot points in an improvised scene while still making it funny and without feeling forced.

6 Lewis Will Be Missed: He Brings A Unique Energy To The Show

Like Susie Essman and J.B. Smoove, Lewis brings something unique to Curb that no other cast member brings to the table. His fictional self’s insecurities make Larry’s own insecurities look like a walk in the park by comparison.

Perhaps owing to the fact that Lewis himself is a comedian (like Essman, Smoove, Larry David, and Jeff Garlin), his ad-libs in Curb have the double whammy of contributing to the outlined situation at hand while also being a well-crafted one-liner.

5 Hope To See: Dr. Morrison

Philip Baker Hall hasn’t appeared on Curb as Larry’s physician Dr. Morrison for a few years, but he’s due for a comeback. The character’s storylines have always resulted in pitch-perfect cringe humor, like Larry asking for his home number.

Hall’s delivery in his interactions with Larry is hysterically deadpan, playing the frustrated straight man to his buffoonery: “Yeah, there’s definitely a prick involved.”

4 Lewis Will Be Missed: His Improvs With Larry Are Influenced By A Lifelong Friendship

Larry David met Richard Lewis at a summer camp when they were kids and they instantly hated each other. They later got reacquainted on the New York comedy club scene in their 20s and they’ve been close friends ever since.

As a result, Lewis’ improvs with David on Curb are influenced by a lifelong friendship. He knows what makes Larry tick and gives him setups to pounce on, like comparing Michael’s blindness to his own intimacy issues.

3 Hope To See: Jerry Seinfeld

The fictionalized Curb version of Jerry Seinfeld made a cameo appearance in the audience of The Producers in season 4, then played a more prominent role in the Seinfeld reunion show storyline in season 7.

Throughout that season, Seinfeld’s improvisations with David were spectacular. They haven’t lost any of their chemistry since the Seinfeld days and it shows on-screen.

2 Lewis Will Be Missed: He’s Been With The Show Since The Very Beginning

In the very first episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry gets into an argument with a woman at a movie theater who turns out to be Richard Lewis’ girlfriend. When Richard confronted Larry about the argument, the two established Curb’s style.

Unlike a lot of supporting players who were picked up along the way, Lewis has been with Curb since the very beginning. He’s one of the key ingredients.

1 Hope To See: Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes hasn’t been on Curb for years — not since season 8 back in 2011 — possibly because she’s been busy with other projects when the show is shooting, or because David has focused more on newer characters.

But it would be great to see her again before the series ends its run. There are countless examples of Wanda making a great foil for Larry: the terrorist attack warning, the valet debate, the “a** man” debacle, etc.
