Maybe the biggest news story of 2020 was how Cyberpunk 2077 was released as a buggy, glitchy, unfinished mess on previous-gen consoles, but especially on the PlayStation 4. So many angry Cyberpunk players demanded refunds that Sony actually delisted the game from the PlayStation Store, meaning the only way to actually play the game on PlayStation was to have already purchased a physical copy.

Apparently, that was a joint decision with CD Projekt Red to stem the tide of returns that had backlogged Sony’s customer service department. It was also a “tough decision,” according to PlayStation head Jim Ryan in a new interview with Axios.

“This was a tough decision for us to make, but ultimately, we had to act in the interests of the PlayStation Community, and not knowingly sell a game that might result in a bad experience for them,” Ryan said.

Since then, the game has remained delisted even though CD Projekt Red has released several large patches fixing hundreds of bugs and improving gameplay across all platforms.

Ryan offered no metrics by which Cyberpunk 2077 could be put back on the PlayStation Store, leaving in doubt whether the game will ever find its way back onto Sony’s consoles.

Negotiations between CDPR and Sony are still ongoing, according to business development VP Michał Nowakowski in an April interview, but he added that the PlayStation delisting hurt their sales not just on the PS4 and PS5, but also on other platforms.

Besides discussing Cyberpunk’s issues, Ryan also touched on the ongoing console shortage. Sony has shipped almost eight million PS5s as of March, but demand still far outstrips Sony’s supply.

This really frustrates me and upsets me, especially when resellers and bots manage to get their hands on stock,” Ryan said, adding that Sony is “working incredibly hard” with retailers to ensure PS5s get into “the right hands.”
