Between the sniper rifles, baseball bats, and submachine guns, you’ll also be able to equip a cybernetic weapon to your arms in Cyberpunk 2077. There are some enticing and flashy choices, but many gamers have decided that the monowire is the best choice because it fulfills a function that no other weapon or cybernetic can fill.

The monowire is a veteran’s tool, but the game is new, so you’ll likely be confused by its unruly nature. No worries, take a deep breath and, in a few minutes, you’ll understand how you will soon be walking around Night City with a tool that citizens of all walks of life, from hackers to snipers, have come to know and respect and fear once they understand its potential.

Updated on Aprile 25th, 2021 by Hodey Johns: While feedback on this article has been largely positive, there have been some readers who wanted to know more about what a build based around the monowire would look like. The skills section has been updated with a full array of relevant skills and a description of how each one would help. Additionally, each section has had its most important tidbits highlighted in bold for those who would like to quickly scan for answers to their questions.

Find The Legendary Monowire

Step one is obviously picking up the monowire. You can buy it, but you have to hope the vendor has it in stock where the prices are gouging and it might not be the quality that you want. Let’s circumvent that process and find the location of a legendary monowire so you won’t have to be constantly replacing the item for the rest of the game. Thankfully, even if you’re stuck in the starting area, the best overall monowire isn’t too far away!

  • Make your way to the Watson District.
  • Find Charter Street
  • Head down the on-ramp (cars will be driving toward you).
  • Turn left on Malley Place

  • At the end of the street, head left at the Pharmaceuticals building (they probably could have used some more creativity with the name).
  • You’ll see a sign for Stephenson Technology to the left of an open garage. Hug the corner on the right and open the garage.
  • Inside, you’ll see a chest containing that legendary monowire!

You’ll still need to find a Ripperdoc to install it, but you won’t have to pay a cent. It’s nice of them to install anything you find for free, isn’t it?

Why Use The Monowire

Cyberpunk 2077 Everything You Need To Know About Monowire (And Their Upgrades)

With so many great melee weapons in the game, it can be hard to forfeit them in exchange for this cybernetic. It’s one of the reasons this tool has stayed a secret for as long as it has. But players are learning that there is more to it than meets the eye.

One specific deception that had the community fooled is that it looks sharp but it is technically a blunt weapon and will receive any Street Brawler perks and skills that you have. Yet, like a sharp weapon, the monowire applies bleed damage. So you’ll be getting the best of both worlds.

Though V holds the weapon like a garrote wire, it’s actually deployed like a whip in practice. The range is much farther than it appears on-screen or in the animation, but after a couple of tries, you’ll see that it has a better effective range than most shotguns.

The stamina drain is also much more friendly than using even a sleek and lightweight katana. It makes sense because it is a string after all, but it’s a nice touch that really makes the monowire shine in longer fights.

Lastly, the chance to decapitate is not just a traditional “gory” modifier tacked on to this weapon. If you proc the chance for a decapitation, then the enemy will instantly die even if your damage would not have been enough to kill it. That makes this a particularly effective option against high-threat enemies that will require multiple blows.

How To Use The Monowire Effectively

Cyberpunk 2077 Everything You Need To Know About Monowire (And Their Upgrades)

The description says that it will charge up while not in combat, which is accurate, but it must be equipped and wielded, not just in your items. So start from stealth and sneak up on an unsuspecting target before unleashing your first blow.

There is a drawback listed on the item and it is that the monowire has to recharge between uses to do full-strength damage. Once again, this is true, but there is a rather pleasant way to avoid this problem. The monowire will stagger most low and medium-threat targets, so you’ll be able to whip down a targeted enemy before they can start shooting.

The critical hits are the secret to the whole thing. One critical hit to the head, neck, or torso region will lop off the enemy’s head and end the fight. So “reduced” damage really doesn’t matter if the target has been instantly reduced to zero health.

Ideally, combat should flow nicely by killing one enemy instantly and then stun locking any other enemies who see you do this. Whip them down until they are dead and then get back into stealth and repeat the process on the next unsuspecting targets.

Target Skills And Building Around The Monowire

Cyberpunk 2077 Everything You Need To Know About Monowire (And Their Upgrades)

Cyberpunk 2077 has received criticism from notable sources for being stingy with still points. As a result, it can be unwise to select perks that will only benefit the monowire unless you’re planning on building around the monowire as a primary weapon. If so, the monowire build is awesome, and here are the major skills that will result in maximum carnage:

  • Body – Street Brawler – Flurry, Dazed, Opportune Strike, Frenzy, Guerilla
  • Cool – Stealth – Strike From The Shadows, Ninjutsu, Leg Up, From the Shadows
  • Cool – Cold Blood – Coolagulant, Critical Condition, Cold Blood, Blood Brawl, Merciless

Because the monowire counts as a blunt weapon, most perks in the Street Brawler skill tree are going to be awesome. Flurry increases attack damage with combos by 50%. The combo for the monowire is that ‘X’ shaped flourish, which comes up often. This will help to offset the decreased damage the monowire has in sustained combat. By putting two points into Dazed, you give the monowire a 30% chance to stun. With how ridiculously fast the weapon is, this will completely eliminate the primary target as a threat, meaning one-on-one combat situations will no longer be problematic.

The Cool tree is the next place to go after grabbing those Street Brawler Perks. Strike from the Shadows increases crit chance by 15% while sneaking. Because the gameplay incentivizes striking from stealth and then reentering stealth, there is a lot of value here. Also, Ninjutsu guarantees a critical strike when crouching from stealth. This essentially guarantees a one-hit decapitation to open every encounter.

The Cold Blood powers are normally reserved for players who rapidly go from one kill to the next. However, monowire build users in Cyberpunk 2077 can get the same benefits from repeatedly ducking back into stealth so long as they take Coolagulant (lose only one stack at a time) and Critical Condition (increases duration of the buff).

Upgrades

You will have three slots for which to amplify your monowire. One slot only changes the type of damage done, which can be helpful if you sense an enemy weakness, but the standard physical damage is a great all-around choice. The other two options are straightforward:

  • Sensory Amplifier Mod – Increases crit chance by 10%. You could select another one, but this weapon revolves around critical hits, so don’t overthink it.
  • Monowire Battery, High-Capacity – Increases charge damage by 50%. There are other batteries that do less charge damage, but why settle? This is the best one currently in the game.

Enjoy your slicing and dicing out there!
