In an announcement that no one expected, the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 confirms that Keanu Reeves and his in-game character Johnny Silverhand are canon within the game’s universe. Despite a series of release delays, Cyberpunk 2077 is officially confirmed to launch on December 10. Meanwhile, publisher CD Projekt is stoking anticipation for the beleaguered title by peppering more Keanu Reeves into its publicity – because nothing stirs up frenzy quite as well as the internet’s boyfriend.

Reeves has been heavily involved in Cyberpunk 2077’s marketing, and his appearance in E3 2019, where he confirmed his role in the game as Johnny Silverhand, became the stuff of meme legend. His company, Arch Motorcycles, also took a role in the game by providing motorcycle sound effects and bike designs before Reeves took on the role of Silverhand, a role he expanded. In the game’s universe, Silverhand has disappeared thirty years after the Collapse, the fall of Western civilization, which is replaced by widespread corporatocracy. Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in Night City, a megacity in the Free State of North California, where the game’s protagonist, V, operates as a mercenary. The game, based on the original Cyberpunk tabletop franchise, was announced back in 2012, but innumerable delays and controversies pushed the release to December 10 of this year.

Interests were piqued when a lyric from the song “No Save Point” by the game’s fictional cyberpunk group Yankee and the Brave (voiced by Run the Jewels) made a direct reference to Reeves, who voices Johnny Silverhand. The lyric, “Keanu Reeves, cyber arm under my sleeve,” at first glance seems like little more than an on-the-nose reference to Reeves’ involvement, but is noticeably out of place in a fictional alternate universe where the action star theoretically shouldn’t exist. Although elements of the game have already made their way into the real world, like Silverhand’s Porsche 911, the lyric is a small instance of the real world making its way into the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. And a tweet by CD Projekt’s senior quest designer Patrick K. Mills took that even further by confirming that Reeves the actor does, in fact, exist in there, although his career doesn’t seem to have quite the successful luster of his real-world counterpart’s.

The KR lyric is lore friendly. It’s an in universe cultural reference to KR, a little known Collapse-era actor who bore and uncanny resemblance to Johnny Silverhand, and in the years following Johnny’s disappearance, was frequently mistaken for JS. 👉🤛 https://t.co/AxpPvlww97

So Johnny Silverhand, whose appearance is based on and who is voiced by Keanu Reeves, is noted for his uncanny resemblance to Reeves, who exists in the same universe as Johnny as a little-known actor (ouch) during the Collapse and is constantly mistaken for Johnny, who has disappeared. No word yet as to whether or not Johnny Silverhand will strike the Wyld Stallyns pose at any point in game. Thankfully, that’s about as confusing as it gets – while Reeves is hardly the only major talent lined up to lend their voice to the game, he’s the only one who’s scored canon status as an actor in Cyberpunk 2077’s universe.
