The difference in graphical power between current gaming PCs and new consoles like the PlayStation 5 has been a point of discussion throughout the year, and now players can check it out for themselves thanks to some recently released screenshots of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red’s futuristic shooter RPG is currently making headlines for good or ill as its launch is finally upon players, and it looks to be one of the defining titles of 2020.

Much of the buzz leading up to Cyberpunk 2077’s arrival has been positive, owing to a plethora of promising features and customization options as well as a killer celebrity endorsement from none other than Keanu Reeves – who has a starring role in the game as the rebel rockstar Johnny Silverhand. However, while most initial reviews are as positive as one would expect from the developers of classic RPGs like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, early players are reporting several potentially game-breaking bugs and glitches that seem to be a symptom of CD Projekt Red’s infamous staff crunch during the game’s development.

While fans decide whether they’re going to take the plunge into Night City at launch, Video Games Chronicle has received several screenshots of the game running on both PC (powered by GeForce RTX 2070 and rendered with all visual settings set to max and medium level ray-tracing) and PS5 (or rather, the PS4 version being upscaled with the PS5’s backward compatibility), allowing viewers to compare how it runs on both platforms. While the PC version predictably has an edge over the console edition in terms of graphical clarity and detail, the PS5 isn’t so far behind, with the differences between the two versions being quite minor. Check out a few of the screenshots below (the PC-rendered images are the ones without text on the top):

The PlayStation 5’s graphics were initially hailed as being technically superior to modern high-end gaming PCs before the system’s release last month, and these Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots might arguably make a case for that. Indeed, the PS5’s graphical capabilities (courtesy of the console’s cutting-edge Solid-State Drive memory unit) have still turned the heads of players and critics alike, especially in regards to how it upscales PS4 titles like Cyberpunk 2077 to benefit from the beefier technology of the new system.

Cyberpunk 2077 has always been expected to be a visually impressive game, but seeing just how close the PC and PS5 versions are in regards to graphics is an eye-opening experience – not just for CD Projekt Red’s newest blockbuster RPG, but for the gaming industry as a whole. Consoles are finally catching up with high-end gaming PCs when it comes to rendering capability, and the fact that the PlayStation 5 visuals shown in these Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots are merely upscaled versions of the PS4 port makes the potential of the new console generation all the more exciting. In the meantime, players are now finally able to see Cyberpunk 2077 in all of its gritty, neon-lit splendor.
