It’s no secret that Cyberpunk 2077 is the most anticipated game of the year, but what we didn’t know until yesterday was that it is so in-depth that you can finish the entire game by completing only side quests. It seems that developer CD PROJEKT RED is serious about allowing people with the cajones to finish the game without completing the main storyline.

In a recent interview, lead quest designer Pawel Sasko explained that, while fans may have expected branching storylines similar to The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk will be moving the concept forward to the point where you won’t even have to finish the main story to get an ending to the game. He elaborated by saying,

Those subplots allow us to do something that we have never done before – they change the main plot of the game. And they are doing that in such a way that you may not even finish the main plot, but still finish the game and get a completely different epilogue than the player with a different lifepath who made different choices, met different characters and formed relationships with them.

Other titles have attempted to do something like this, such as Far Cry, but this would be one of the first times—and maybe the smoothest—that you can fully finish the game on your own terms and get your own ending. It remains to be seen how unique these endings will be, or how much your choices influence the storyline, however, based on Sasko’s statement, we can be sure that it’ll be fairly significant.

The mere presence of the three “lifepaths” that are available in the game are evidence of CDPR’s commitment to replayability. Each lifepath will grant you not only a different opening but also different abilities to draw on and disadvantages to work through while you play. If each of those paths can lead to its own ending, separate from the main story, we may see how CDPR is going to pull off ending a game without players finishing the main quest.

With a game as ambitious as Cyberpunk promises to be, it would be incredible to see it accomplish truly unique endings that feel as satisfying and complete as the main ending. Other games may give you alternate endings, but the idea that you can (maybe) completely ignore the main quest and still “finish” the game is intriguing to say the lease. We will have to see what it all looks like when the game comes out this November.
