Abby Lee Miller of Dance Moms fame is being called out on social media for alleged racist comments and actions during filming of the show. Dance Moms began airing on Lifetime in 2011 and aired its final episode in 2019. It featured many young girls aspiring to be dancers, including Maddie Ziegler and YouTube star JoJo Siwa.

Miller is head of the Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC), which is the main focus of Dance Moms. She is a demanding coach and teacher for the young girls in her school. This isn’t the first time Miller has been in trouble publicly; she resigned from Dance Moms for a period in 2017 when she was sentenced to one year in jail for fraud. She ended up serving only 10 months because of her battle with cancer. Miller returned to the show in 2019 after her release from prison.

As reported by E! News, multiple moms featured on the show have come out against Miller for making racist remarks to them and their daughters. Adriana Smith, a season 8 mom, wrote an extensive post on her Instagram about the way she and her daughter were treated by Miller while on the show. She quotes Miller saying to her, “Do you want me to tell you why you’re really here?” continuing, “LOOK in the MIRROR! That’s the only reason you are here.” Smith adds that her daughter, Kamryn, heard Miller say that, “they needed a sprinkle of color.” Check out her post below:

These remarks ultimately led Smith to the decision to leave the show. She explained in her final, tear-filled interview with producers, she was asked how Miller’s actions made her feel. Smith replied, “This is nothing new to me. But what I’m not going to have happen is have this racist person have any part of my daughter’s life.” She added, “At that moment, I knew it was more important for me to show my daughter she has to stand up for what’s right and not care about anything else.”

Producer of Dance Moms Kori Kingg responded to Smith’s comments in a Facebook post, writing, “THIS broke me as I was working on the show and pregnant with my own black daughter. In hindsight, I should have left too.” Kingg added, “Seeing a 7 year old little black girl be put in a box in a corner and treated so violently because of the color of her skin was heartbreaking. It reminded me of when I ‘found out I was black,’ at an age not much older than her.”

Another mom from Dance Moms, Camille Bridges, wrote an e-mail to E! News to share her and her daughter Camryn’s experiences with racist comments and behavior from Miller. Bridges claims in the e-mail that Miller, “tried to spin Camryn as being the poor one and there on scholarship,” and she, “shut that down immediately.” She added, “[Miller] loves appropriating our culture and never appreciating it. She did not give black choreographers on the show acknowledgement of their work.” When Bridges found out that Miller was returning to the show after her stint in prison, she decided to pull her daughter from the dance company, writing, “the environment was extremely hostile with her there.”

These allegations come after a tumultuous week of protests of George Floyd’s death and police brutality against black people across the United States. The Black Lives Matter movement has been steadily gaining momentum, and more and more stories like Bridges’ and Smith’s are being shared. Miller posted on her Instagram to support Blackout Tuesday on June 2nd, but deleted the post shortly after. She has not yet responded to the allegations.
