The macabre visual novel series Danganronpa is making its way from its way from PCs and consoles to mobile devices sometime soon, bringing all three mainline games to the pocket-sized platform. As bizarre as it captivating, the Danganronpa games put players into the shoes of one unlucky student chosen randomly every year to compete in a twisted game of whodunit hosted by an unmanned robot bear.

Speaking to Japanese gaming fixture Famitsu (and as translated by Gematsu), developer Spike Chunsoft announced that the three mainline Danganronpa titles (Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony) will be “coming to smartphone” in special “Anniversary Edition” versions. The mobile ports will have all-new features, such as “new user interface, improved playability with touch controls, an event gallery, an expressions and voice gallery, and an art gallery.” For now, there are no release dates scheduled.

This lateral move into the mobile market for Danganronpa comes despite increasing interest in console gaming in Japan, but interactive visual novels like this do seem like a logical and mechanical fit for smartphones. Over the past decade, the series has grown from its small-but-dedicated cult following internationally into a decently recognizable franchise, having been adapted into multiple anime series along the way. The cartoony, microtransaction-filled samey-ness that Clash of Clans wrought upon the mobile market needs more varied titles to counterbalance the App Store and Google Play Store libraries, and darker releases like the recent Dead by Daylight port and Danganronpa are excellent additions.
