The yellow suit of Daredevil may be seen by some as the hero’s garish first attempt at finding the right style for his mission, but actually, it comes from a place of love. Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s Daredevil: Yellow explores the early days of Matt Murdock’s war on crime including his first night out in costume which, as it turns out, connects the Man without Fear to someone very important to him.

Daredevil: Yellow is a part of Loeb and Sale’s “Color” series, a collection of several miniseries that features Marvel heroes such as Spider-Man and the Hulk looking back on their careers and reflecting on the connection to their loved ones. For Daredevil, Loeb and Sale examine his relationship with Karen Page, but make sure to touch upon another person taken from Matt too soon.

The first issue of Daredevil: Yellow portrays a young Matt Murdock in law school, rooming with Foggy Nelson listening to his father’s boxing matches on the radio. Though blind and being bombarded with a cacophony of senses, Matt is content to spend time with his father. Things aren’t all good, though as Matt picks up on the trouble Battlin’ Jack Murdock is in with his new manager Sweeney. Though implored to take a dive in the biggest bout of his life, Jack refuses and beats Carl “Crusher” Creel and is promptly murdered for his defiance. With the law unable to take down Sweeney, Matt is determined to do something himself after rifling through his father’s belongings.

Inspired by the stories of Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four, Matt fashions his prototype Daredevil suit out of his father’s boxing materials. With a bit of craftwork, he’s able to turn his father’s trunks, boots and robe into the outfit he would grace the world with in Daredevil #1. Matt breaks in the outfit by pursuing the men who killed Jack, noting all the while that the one thing his father never wanted was for Matt to become someone like him. But by taking Jack’s boxing garb and transforming it into his first costume, Matt does respect his father’s requests. Daredevil believes in a system of rules, but understands that outside forces are sometimes necessary to find justice. In using his fists in coordination with his knowledge of the law, Matt is more than the “uneducated pug” Jack thought himself to be. Daredevil’s yellow costume serves as a reminder of what his father wanted for him, as well as honor the man he looked up to.

While the yellow costume would eventually be replaced with the traditional and more protective red costume, it no less stands as an important part of Matt’s history. As bright and colorful as it was, the suit is an important reminder for what Daredevil is fighting for and a tribute to a fallen loved one.
