Daredevil is one of the most recognizable superheroes in Marvel’s canon. The maroon leather jumpsuit (devoid of bulky body armor or a clunky utility belt), hip-strapped billy club holster, and legendary devil horns all blend together to give Matt Murdock one of the best costumes in the business. But this wasn’t always the case, as seen in earlier iterations of the man without fear’s getup. Looking at it today, you can’t help but think that he would inspire laughter from New York City’s criminal underbelly rather than strike fear in it.

Matt Murdock’s alter ego hasn’t changed much from the acrobatic do-gooder introduced in the pages of Daredevil #1 back in 1964. The tragic backstory, super-heightened senses, and lawyer day-job are all there, as are pals Foggy Nelson and Karen Page. But god lord is his costume a sight to behold. A canary yellow jumpsuit and cowl with a maroon singlet emblazoned with a scarlet “D” pulled over it, the avenger of Hell’s Kitchen earns his “Man Without Fear” moniker by simply stepping outside in that mess. Bursting in on a group of mobsters during the opening pages of his debut, one of the soon-to-be-throttled crooks seems unable to hold back the giggles. “I’ve seen nutty getups, but this takes the cake!” Unsurprisingly, Daredevil doesn’t take the fashion critique well.

While certainly an eyesore, Daredevil’s first appearance costume also sports a number of elements that would translate over to the now-iconic uniform that would be introduced six issues later.

The horns were obviously kept, as was the billy club holster strapped to his upper thigh. Even the “D” stitched to the singlet’s chest was adopted and doubled up to make his famous overlapping “DD” logo. The bright yellow jumpsuit, however, took a hike. And it’s no wonder: being a stealthy crime fighter operating under cover of night would be difficult when you’re also the color of a sunbeam.

It’s interesting to note that Matt’s choice of color can’t be chalked up to the fact that he can’t conventionally see. As he’s putting together his costume in Daredevil #1, the hero says that he can detect the hue of the material he’s using through touch, stating “each colored fabric has a different feel to me!” Which is yet another fascinating aspect to the man without fear’s super senses, but also leaves you scratching your head at the strange choice he makes. Oh well, it’s not like he’s the only superhero to make questionable fashion decisions upon starting their crime-fighting careers.
