Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars #16!

As the Star Wars crossover event War of the Bounty Hunters continues, Darth Vader is going toe-to-toe with Han Solo’s lost love, Qi’ra. The Empire’s tyrant leader will have to prove himself against Crimson Dawn’s crime lord.

Since Han Solo’s carbonite encased body had left the possession of Boba Fett, it has been an ongoing battle to recover the smuggler. The crossover which has involved various ongoing Star Wars titles, including Darth Vader, Bounty Hunters, Star Wars, and a few others, has explored some unanticipated encounters between characters. Previously, Darth Vader took on the bounty hunter IG-88, who he nearly lost to during their fight. As Han’s past flame returns, Qi’ra might be the only one passionate enough to singlehandedly take on the Empire. The galaxy’s most powerful crime syndicate takes on Darth Vader in Star Wars #16, written by Charles Soule with art by Ramon Rosanas and a cover by Carlo Pagulayan.

After Qi’ra was auctioning off Han Solo’s body aboard the Vermillion, Darth Vader stormed the scene, interrupting the Hutts’ winning bid. As revealed by StarWars.com, Qi’ra is immediately ready to fight the Sith, engaging in a duel. When she reappeared earlier on in the event, fans wondered if she might have had training in the Force from Maul, the former leader of Crimson Dawn. As she fights Vader, it appears she did pick up a thing or two from her old boss. Darth Vader acknowledges her skills, which are likely even more apparent after besting Luke in The Empire Strikes Back. “You have… training. I recognize the lineage of your instruction.” “Do you, Lord Vader? Then you know you’re in trouble.”

Although they clash blades, it’s unclear whether Qi’ra possesses the Force herself. Regardless, Vader recognizes her fighting style as it likely originated from the Sith. Despite not being an official Sith, Qi’ra is evidently strong with the dark side, relying on her aggression to survive the fight. As she takes on Vader in front of the rebels prior to the events of Return of the Jedi, it’s a funny juxtaposition. Lando tells Leia that he once knew Qi’ra, and that Han knew her too. It’s unfortunate she doesn’t qualify as a recruit to the Rebel Alliance, as she shows off her moves against their number one enemy.

As the fight continues and causes a distraction, the three rebels discuss whether they should retrieve Han. Deciding it’s too risky, Lando and Chewbacca bow out of the plan, leaving Leia to do it herself. Given that the rebels don’t rescue Han until the opening of Return of the Jedi, Leia is bound to fail. Either she will soon face the Hutts, who have a claim on Solo, or she has to go up against Darth Vader or Qi’ra on her own. War of the Bounty Hunters has had no shortage of interesting character interactions, and the trend continues in Star Wars #16, releasing on August 18.
