Kevin Smith has said that if he were to create a list of the greatest pop culture villains of all time, he’d give the top spots to Star Wars sith-lord Darth Vader and Masters of the Universe’s Skeletor. Smith’s latest project, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, is a direct sequel to the classic 80s fantasy series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, once again pitting He-Man and companions into battle against Skeletor and his cohort. The series looks deeper into the mysteries of Castle Grayskull, as well as Warrior Goddess Teela’s destiny, a character that takes a central role in the series’ cast of main protagonists.

While Masters of The Universe has a long-standing history at the forefront of pop culture, Smith is also something of a cultural icon himself. Rising to prominence throughout the ’90s and early 2000s with cult comedy classics like Clerks, Chasing Amy, and the Jay and Silent Bob series, Smith has proven to be successful both in front of and behind the camera thanks to his skills as both a filmmaker and an accomplished actor. Smith’s penchant for eclectic buddy comedies has led several of his movies to end up sharing a cinematic universe called the View Askewniverse, with the long-awaited Clerks 3 the latest Smith movie to join the series. The lifelong comic fan has also turned his hand to writing in the past, creating runs for several comic outlets including Marvel and DC.

Never one to shy away from movie talk, Smith has decided on his top two favorite villains ever during an interview with Thrillist. When asked where he would place Skeletor on a list of the greatest pop culture villains of all time, Smith said that He-Man’s archnemesis belongs at the very top, alongside Star Wars supervillain Darth Vader. Elaborating on his picks, Smith said he was “talking about true villain—somebody who has nothing but bad intended,” while also saying that iconic DC villain the Joker would make the cut.

“This could be controversial due to the fact that I’m working on Masters of the Universe, but honestly, I think it goes Darth Vader, Skeletor. Thinking about pop culture villains, who else ranks as high? And I’m not just talking about your misunderstood villains like Frankenstein or Dracula. I’m talking about true villain—somebody who has nothing but bad intended. So I feel like you got Darth Vader, Skeletor, Joker, and then somewhere down the list, you got some Marvel villains, but I put him high up there, man. Even people who don’t know Masters of the Universe know Skeletor because he’s just a badass visual. He’s got a skull for a face. That’s metal as hell.”

Vader and Skeletor both make for menacing, terrifying villains in their respective franchises, but both are very different takes on what makes a ‘true’ screen villain so effective. Vader is cold and imposing, striking fear into his enemies through presence alone, while the power-hungry Skeletor is prone to violent outbursts between fits of maniacal laughter. Smith is often vocal regarding his love of all things pop culture, especially Star Wars, so seeing Vader at the top of his list is an obvious choice for the filmmaker. With a history of cameos, acting credits, and writing gigs across multiple franchises, it’s no wonder that Smith’s pop culture opinions are so valued by fans.

Smith’s latest series has had something of a rough time on Netflix, going directly up against a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe reboot, leading many fans to draw comparisons between the two. While critically Smith’s series has been received favorably, fan consensus has not been so positive. Having such close Masters of the Universe competition didn’t help Smith’s sequel, but it was also hindered by being split into two parts, the break between the two allowing viewers to develop a sour taste toward Smith’s mature take on the franchise. Now, with Masters of the Universe: Revelation part 2 available on Netflix, Smith’s vision for a proper He-Man sequel can be appreciated in its full intended form.
