Here we are, Dauntless fans. If you thought that the only thing the game needed was a dash of neon and a punk rock mohawk that doubles as a ‘helmet,’ well… that’s a strange request. Nevertheless, your time has come.

Now, the Monster Hunter franchise has always been a roaring (pun fully intended) success in Japan, but it took its time to really gain a foothold in the West. Its big breakthrough, perhaps, was the Wii’s Monster Hunter Tri, which landed in the west in April 2010. The accessibility and popularity of the Wii was a great fit for the title, as the system’s catalog certainly had a space for this kind of hardcore action RPG.

The PSP titles have already had a dedicated following, of course, but as far as PlayStation is concerned, it was the smash-hit Monster Hunter: World which really lit the paper on the franchise’s Barrel Bomb of success. In short, western gamers who are ravenously consuming Iceborne certainly have a new appetite for hunting games. All eyes are on Dauntless, then, to keep players engaged.

As a free-to-play title, Dauntless is a game that represents precious little risk. Players have nothing to lose by hopping in to try it out (and many have done since it released on Nintendo Switch in December 2019), but on the same token, they’ll soon leave it behind again if it doesn’t hold their interest. The best way for Phoenix Labs/Epic Games to keep Slayers gripped is with regular seasonal content, as we saw with the Frostfall event that has just come to a close. What’s next? Well, those mohawks we promised earlier, that’s what.

The Aetherpunk Hunt Pass has just arrived in the game, and it brings some of the most stylish cosmetics and electrifying missions we’ve seen yet. The aetherpunk armor and mohawk helm skin is sure to get you noticed on the battlefield (from several miles away, even,) and that’s just for starters. The Swirling Streamers and Tag, You’re It! emotes, plus the Kick the Can arrival, are also available (at Elite level 5, 40 and 45 respectively.) Then there’s the Power Rider arrival and the Tubular Edge Bundle, which is… well, it’s a heck of a bold look, as you can see at the top of the page.

Cosmetics aside, convenient new ways to communicate your feelings are available through the new Dauntless Quick Emojis, Hunt Pass bonuses make their return, and the Saint’s Bond holiday is returning with seven new contracts (and rewards) to take on on February 13.

There’s a lot happening in Dauntless just now, and it’s starting to look like a more fleshed out package with each passing month.
