The rework for the Sword weapon in Dauntless is long overdue, and finally coming on July 30. This has been a community requested change for some time now, but as the developer explains, changing one of the core weapons was no easy task.

Speaking about the weapon, they say, “We built the original sword to be a jack of all trades. A reliable, simple weapon that even a new Slayer could pick up and swing. And it was that. But as Dauntless expanded and other weapons deepened in complexity, the sword just couldn’t seem to keep up.”

The main problem with the sword then is that it is too simple by design. New players start with he Sword and then begin working their way through Behemoth hunts while doing the initial set of quests in Ramsgate, but in no time at all, the simple combo is perfected and there was little thought needed. This made gameplay easy in some cases, but quite boring.

The new rework is centered around three main components. Core combos to generate Valour as a resource, Valour combos that use the resource, and a special meter to execute special moves.

The core combos are simple, three-hit combos. They are easy and quick but dish out little damage, with the real benefit of creating resources for use. Meanwhile, those Valour combos execute powerful moves. A Slayer can only have six Valour at a time, and each of the four combos that are available cost three Valour each:

  • Crescent Strike (Light-Light-Heavy): A powerful strike with high, reliable damage.
  • Resounding Echo (Heavy-Light-Heavy): Plunge your sword into the ground, leaving behind an AoE pool that ticks damage over time.
  • Bladerush (Hold Light): A medium-range dash and slash attack.
  • Bladesurge (Hold Heavy): Launch a ranged projectile from your sword that can interrupt Behemoths.

Lastly, special moves will come from using the Special meter from the original sword system, which remains with the reward. However, instead of a single hit, Slayers need to land their full combo to generate meter.

New mods will also be added into the game, which is necessary as many of the old ones simply no longer function in the same way. Any mods already earned through Mastery or purchased through Lady Luck will be replaced for free with their new versions.

Once the update of 1.3.3 live on July 30, players should head over to the Training Grounds to test out their new sword skills!
