Those waiting for the next big zombie-genre game, Days Gone, will have to wait a little longer.

Originally tagged with a February 2019 release date, Sony announced yesterday that the open-world action-adventure zombie game will be delayed two months, with a new release date scheduled for April 26, 2019.

The announcement came via the PlayStation Blog with a post that indicated that Bend Studio – the studio behind the Syphon Filter franchise – “will take the opportunity to further polish Days Gone.”

The title has already been delayed prior to this news, having originally been scheduled for a 2018 release following the initial announcement of the game at E3 2016.

Days Gone The PS4 Exclusive Zombie Game Delayed Two Months

It’s understandable that a developer would want to ensure a solid, polished game upon release, especially one as highly anticipated as Days Gone. But let’s be honest. The primary reason for the delay is more than likely due to the fact that the February release would have seen an increase in competition from other game releasing at the same time, such as Anthem and Metro Exodus, as well as Microsoft-exclusive, Crackdown 3. Days Gone would certainly lose out on some sales to those other games. At least, initially.

Sales would more than likely have been made up over time, as Days Gone will likely be what holds gamers over until The Last of Us 2 releases, tentatively scheduled for June 2019. Now, Days Gone will only have about two months to snag gamers’ attention, before all zombie-related gaming focus will no doubt shift to The Last of Us 2. And while Days Gone will differ in gameplay from The Last of Us 2, with its more action-oriented gameplay and open-world setting, The Last of Us 2 will undoubtedly steal the show as one of 2019’s most anticipated titles.

Ultimately, delaying Days Gone will be a good thing for the game regardless of the reason for the delay. Two extra months of development and testing will only assist in ensuring a smooth gameplay experience. However, considering the timing of The Last of Us 2’s release date, hopefully there will be no more delays.

Stay tuned to The Gamer and keep an eye out for our review of Days Gone when it comes out (hopefully) on April 26, 2019, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
