DC’s upcoming Black Adam movie, starring Dwayne Johnson in the title role, is expected to begin filming in late 2020, according to producer Hiram Garcia. The character was originally going to be introduced in this year’s Shazam!, but Johnson himself suggested that the studio should hold off and have him star in his own solo movie instead. As a result, the main villain in Shazam! was Doctor Sivana – though we did get a brief glimpse of Black Adam.

We recently learned that The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra is set to direct Black Adam, after working with Johnson in the adventure movie Jungle Cruise. Responding to the news on social media, Johnson said that Collet-Serra is “hungry to break new ground with Black Adam and give the fans something very cool and special.” Johnson has also said that Black Adam will begin filming in 2020, but now we have a more specific window.

Speaking to Collider during the press junket for Hobbs & Shaw, Hiram Garcia – the president of Johnson’s production company, Seven Bucks Productions – spoke about some of the studio’s upcoming projects, including Red Notice, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Black Adam. Garcia revealed that Collet-Serra had recently closed his deal to direct Black Adam, and said that “the plan is to begin filming that end of next year.” He also talked about the significant responsibilities of launching Shazam and Black Adam’s corner of the DC universe:

“The success of Shazam! was awesome for us and it was important for us to launch that, get that out into the world and begin crafting this universe. It’s a big thing for us to create this universe, this DC section of the universe, with characters we have planned to bring into it, headlined by Shazam and Black Adam.”

If Black Adam does begin filming at the end of 2020 as planned, that means we should expect to see it in theaters some time in 2022. The only live-action DC movie officially scheduled for that year so far is Aquaman 2, which isn’t in theaters until December, so Black Adam could potentially be DC’s big summer 2022 movie.

The DC Extended Universe is in something of a transitional phase at the moment – moving away from the Marvel-style concept of a single cohesive universe full of team-ups and crossovers, and into more individual franchises. With Batman, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman all in their own corners of the DCEU, it seems as though Shazam and Black Adam will be occupying their own space – but don’t expect to see the two of them battle it out any time soon. Shazam star Zachary Levi has said that Black Adam probably won’t appear in his series until Shazam 3. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see how a character who is traditionally a villain ends up carrying his own movie.
