While Thanos might be the most famous villain to wear a deadly gauntlet, Darkseid actually wore one nearly two full decades before the Mad Titan. In New Gods #7, Jack Kirby revealed why New Genesis and Apokolips originally went to war, as Steppenwolf killed Avia, who was the wife of the later Highfather, Izaya the Inheritor. Darkseid debuts his own gauntlet called the Killing-Glove in the battle, but soon finds out it doesn’t live up to its name.

While Thanos and Darkseid share many similarities as they are the biggest bad guys of their respective universes, the Mad Titan wasn’t modeled after the ruler of Apokolips as certain legends suggest. While eventually, his look changed to resemble Darkseid, Thanos was initially based on a different New God, Metron. Both villains often seek out power in different forms, as Thanos wants the Infinity Stones for his Infinity Gauntlet to create balance in the universe. In contrast, Darkseid seeks out the Anti-Life Equation to have complete control of the universe. The Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich creation would become the most recognizable villain in modern pop culture history thanks to Marvel’s Avengers films. Meanwhile, Darkseid would only recently make his first appearance in live-action in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

In a critical issue of New Gods explaining the mythos behind the characters, Jack Kirby introduces the villain Steppenwolf. Darkseid’s uncle makes an immediate impact in the series, killing Avia, the wife of Izaya. Next, Darkseid turns his attention to Izaya himself and uses a Killing-Glove created by Desaad to take down his rival quickly.

Darkseid and Steppenwolf make one fatal flaw with Izaya, as the ruler of Apokolips suggests his uncle check his body for signs of life, but the villain tells him “there’s no need” since he knows he won’t find any. It turns out Izaya lives through the counter and kills Steppenwolf in the ensuing battle on New Genesis. So while the Killing-Glove looks powerful (with a classic Kirby design), in this particular case, it didn’t do what it was supposed to. New Genesis didn’t fall to Darkseid because of the blunder. But, a war with the planet and Apokolips would begin, only to be stopped (temporarily) with a trade of sons between Darkseid and Highfather.

The Killing-Glove wouldn’t become Darkseid’s go-to-weapon like Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet. However, most people seem to remember it only because the Killing-Glove was an accessory in the Darkseid Build-A-Figure from DC Universe Classics Wave 12 of action figures. It appears as though the weapon never appeared in the comics again – although Darkseid would go onto wield Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet. Obviously, that weapon would become iconic, while the Killing-Glove faded to obscurity.
