Sonic The Hedgehog is speeding his way to the big screen. According to Deadline, the Sega Genesis icon will make his way to theatres in an all-new, live action/CGI movie, which is scheduled to be released by Paramount on November 15, 2019.

The movie will be produced by Neal Moritz, known for his work with The Fast & the Furious franchise, with Deadpool director Tim Miller attached as Executive Producer. Making his feature-length directorial debut is Jeff Fowler, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005 for Best Animated Short for his work directing Gopher Broke.

While this is Sonic’s first major theatrical release, the speedy hedgehog is certainly no stranger to media platforms beyond that of a video game console. The iconic character has been featured in five animated television shows since 1993, as well as an anime-styled movie released in 1996. He has also been the star of a comic book series that holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running comic series based on a video game. Originally released in 1991 on the Sega Genesis during the first real era of the console wars (competing against Nintendo), Sonic actually made the move to other non-Sega platforms, including going up against Mario himself in a series of games that featured the characters competing in the Olympic Games.

It is clear that Sonic has a long-legacy within video game pop culture. But why make a live-action/CGI film featuring him, and why now? Knuckles memes aside, Sonic has not been relevant as a recent topic of conversation. Released in November 2017, Sonic Forces is the latest title in the franchise’s longstanding history, but the game was met with mixed reviews.

Maybe the timing is right for the hedgehog to come to life right now, since Pikachu, another iconic video game character from the world of Pokèmon, is making its live-action/computer-generated animation debut in the upcoming movie Detective Pikachu. Maybe it makes sense to bring Sonic to the big screen now since his legendary story arch has revolved around the powers of the Chaos Emeralds, which could be loosely associated and compared with the Infinity Stones uncovered in the build-up to Avengers: Infinity War. Or maybe, Tim Miller just wants to show off Sonic’s attitude; a feat that he and Ryan Reynolds mastered in Deadpool.

Truth be told, we just don’t know yet. Hopefully, further details will emerge as the November 2019 release date gets closer. Until then, we’ll anxiously be waiting with a chili dog in hand.
