Former Superman actor Dean Cain is getting called by the comic book industry. On Thursday, Cain was criticized by comic book writer Tom King (Mister Miracle) for remarks that one of the Man of Steel’s signature monikers wouldn’t be allowed to be said in today’s political climate.
Cain is best known for portraying Clark Kent on the ’90s television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman alongside Terri Hatcher. Cain has a steady career in film and television while rejoining the DC Universe as Jeremiah Danvers in a seven-episode stint on Supergirl before his character was killed off offscreen. Publicly, Cain has been a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and has made multiple appearances on FOX News. He appeared on Fox & Friends to discuss a Time Magazine article about how it’s time to re-examine superheroes.

On Fox & Friends, Cain was asked to respond to the Time Magazine article by Eliana Docketerman that suggested since the portrayal of police officers on the big screen is being re-examined, that it’s time to also re-examine superheroes. Cain was asked to give his opinion on the piece, where he said anti-police rhetoric drives him “insane,” and that “I promise you, as Superman, I wouldn’t today be allowed to say truth, justice and the American Way,” to which host Ainsley Earhardt agreed with him. One person who didn’t agree with Cain? Comic writer Tom King.
King knows a thing or two about Superman, most recently penning Superman: Up In The Sky alongside Andy Kubert. King dismissed Cain’s comments and had proof to show he was completely wrong in his sentiment the popular Superman phrase wouldn’t be allowed today. In an NSFW response, King responded “Mother F–cker, I put it in a comic this year. smh,” with a page from his Superman series that shows Superman stating that he believes in truth, justice, and the American Way.

Cain’s comments were completely disproven, as modern Superman comics have used the phrase without any backlash or negative responses from the industry itself. Perhaps, Cain hasn’t read King’s Superman run or modern comics at all, where the phrase suddenly hasn’t disappeared from the character’s lexicon. Either he’s unaware, ignorant, or both. Maybe, Cain will see King’s tweets and read King’s run on the character he portrayed. Because his comments are just flat out wrong.
