Dear Sony Please Dont Abandon The Current Spiderman Games For MCU Spiderman Games

Sony’s 2018 hit Marvel’s Spider-Man for PlayStation 4 was one of the most marvelous (pun intended) superhero games in years. By presenting an original story with excellent gameplay mechanics, superb presentation, and compelling performances all-around, Marvel’s Spider-Man was an instant masterpiece. These carefully-crafted plot threads and world-building should not be traded in for Spider-Man games in the lineage of MCU’s Spider-Man.

When news dropped that Disney and Sony, after infamously disagreeing over Disney’s take of the Spider-Man movie property, had officially negotiated a deal that would keep Spider-Man in the MCU for the foreseeable future, the world was overcome with excitement. Now, the charismatic Tom Holland gets to continue his role as Spider-Man and Peter Parker within the MCU, no longer leaving in question whether future Spider-Man films would acknowledge events that transpired in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and so on.

Yet, the news and overwhelming excitement do bring some unfortunate possibilities. Undoubtedly, Tom Holland has done great as Spider-Man and the MCU has made some great Spider-Man films. Though now’s there the possibility that an MCU Spider-Man game could be in consideration. Put simply, this would have terrible consequences going forth and would be a betrayal to fans of the PS4 Spider-Man game.

Disney wanting a connected Spidey game could, of course, result in the demise of the apparent series established by the 2018 Spider-Man game and, as such, would be a tragedy all-around. In other words, fans’ excitement over Spider-Man staying with Disney for the meantime could convince Sony to drop the current line of Spider-Man games altogether in exchange for some MCU-related Spider-Man games, perhaps seeing Tom Holland reprise his role. This would be a crying shame since the last thing anyone needs in a Marvel superhero game is a comic book storyline influenced by the MCU. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has such a strong reach as it currently stands that any further influence on its part might become toxic to the brand and would hamper the immersion of the games.

Above all, Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 established some great plot threads that, left unattended, would be a shame to see go to waste. Seemingly, given the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man, a second Spider-Man game would have seen the arrival of Venom. Further, some evidence suggests that Green Goblin may have made his entrance as well. And frankly, the adult version of Peter Parker seen in the PS4 game was one of the most compelling so far, even in comparison to his comic and film counterparts.

It is imperative that Sony sticks with the Spider-Man series established by the 2018 titles. Having broken ground in the superhero game genre and weaving a universe rife with possibilities, to see Sony opt for Spider-Man games tied with the MCU would be a probable failure on their part and would retroactively lessen the impact given by the 2018 masterpiece. The MCU Spider-Man iteration is good, undoubtedly, but it need not have any influence over what has been masterfully established by Insomniac in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
