Death’s Door The Best Upgrades to Get First

With the protagonist serving as a sort of avian grim reaper, Death’s Door will have players exploring a mysterious realm as they try to locate a soul that has been assigned to them. With the aforementioned soul having been stolen, players will find themselves going up against powerful bosses and upgrading their skills as they try to retrieve it.

The reaper itself can have several abilities on hand, including various spells and more lackluster abilities like dodge rolling and weapon swings. Each of these abilities can be upgraded, although spells often have to be upgraded by defeating certain bosses. But most conventional upgrades can be bought at a merchant by using soul energy, which is a currency that can be found on almost any map in the game.

Most ability upgrades can be found at the main hub. In the monochromatic world known as the Hall of Doors, players need to approach the big bird known as Darwin the Vault Keeper to access the upgrade screen. The cost of these abilities, which starts at 400 souls, drastically increases with each subsequent upgrade in each category. So it is important for players to choose carefully when selecting that first upgrade since souls are so scarce in the early game.

The upgrade categories are listed below:

  • Strength: Affects the reaper’s damage and reach with melee weapons
  • Dexterity: Affects the reaper’s weapon speed and charging rates
  • Haste: Affects the reaper’s movement speed and cooldown between dodges
  • Magic: Affects the reaper’s damage when using magic or ranged abilities

Fortunately, or unfortunately, there is no single best upgrade for players to get immediately. Instead, the best first upgrade for a player to buy is highly dependent on their playstyle. Is the player paranoid about being hit in a fight regardless of their strength? Then prioritize upgrading of haste to ensure that the reaper can dodge roll whenever they need to. Does the player prefer getting up close and personal with enemies? Then upgrade either strength or dexterity to deal additional melee damage. Or does the player prefer to stay at a distance and pelt the enemy with ranged attacks? Then try upgrading haste or magic.

All in all, the best thing for a player to do before upgrading is to experiment with how they want to play. So new players should explore, collect items, and fight enemies for a substantial amount of time before they return to Darwin for an upgrade. Experiment a little, try different tactics, and generally try to get a feel for how a person may want to play the game.
