While Def Jam is mostly associated with distributing hip hop, pop, and urban music from artists such as Big Sean, Kanye West, Nas, 2 Chainz, Teyana Taylor, and Pusha T, there was a time in the early 2002s when the company lent its name to a series of video games, including Def Jam Vendetta, Def Jam: Fight For NY and Def Jam Icon.

Def Jam Vendetta, a 2003 wrestling video game, which featured rappers like DMX, Method Man, Redman, Ludacris, and Ghostface Killah, was largely met with positive reviews with many appreciating that the hip-hop-inspired game had injected new life into the somewhat tired wrestling genre.

Now, Def Jam has teased that they might launch a new game, tweeting, “The streets saying we need a new Def Jam game,” which was followed by another message that read, “Once our twitter hits 1M, we have a special announcement for y’all!” The record label’s Twitter account has now surpassed 1 million followers, so we might be hearing about a new game in the very near future.

Def Jam: Fight for NY, a 3D action video game published by EA Games, followed Def Jam Vendetta in 2004 and featured some of the rappers on the original title as well as Lil’ Kim, Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe, Mobb Deep, Ice-T, Xzibit, and Busta Rhymes, among others. The game allowed players to select several fighting styles like streetfighting, kickboxing, martial arts, wrestling, and submissions. Def Jam: Fight for NY was praised by critics for improving upon its predecessor.

The final entry, Def Jam: Icon, was released in 2007 and veered further away from wrestling to focus on up-close brawling, mixing up blocks, throws, and parries. The game added other big-name rappers like Big Boi, Bun B, E-40, Lil Jon, Sean Paul, T.I., The Game, and Young Jeezy. Although the game was praised for its soundtrack, some critics thought the mechanics were a bit inconsistent and the moves didn’t compare to the previous versions.

A new Def Jam game would benefit from more than a decade of gameplay advances as well as a new generation of rap artists, some of whom seem tailormade for video games, like Kanye West, 2 Chainz, and YK Osiris. We also wouldn’t mind seeing other Def Jam artists like Justin Bieber and Rihanna get in on the action.
