Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Magic is aggressively overpowered in Demon’s Souls. So much so that FromSoftware followed up the PS3 original by completely revamping how magic worked in Dark Souls – trading MP and mana in exchange for a D&D-sequel where different spells have set casts. FromSoftware wasn’t wrong to do so either, as magic remains OP in BluePoint Games’ remake for the PS5.

It’s not a matter of if a mage can get through Demon’s Souls, but how many bodies they’ll leave in their wake. Even the lowest tiered spells in Demon’s Souls can be useful, outdoing anything seen in either Dark Souls or Bloodborne. Demon’s Souls’ magic is arguably the most imbalanced mechanic in the game, but that just lets mages have more fun.

Updated on January 21, 2022, By William Quick: The game that started the Souls-like craze, Demon’s Souls, is still one of the most difficult games to complete. Many try to build beefy characters to tank hits, but some will go the route of spellcasters to dish out magical devastation. If the latter is what you’re planning, you should consider adding these spells to your arsenal.

Soul Arrow

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Soul Arrow is an extremely useful long-range spell a mage can realistically use throughout the whole game. The fact Soul Arrow is so basic – the Royalty class even starts with it equipped – means it also costs relatively little MP to cast.

  • MP Cost: 5
  • Slot Cost: 1

Soul Arrow can be learned in the Nexus as soon as you defeat Phalanx. Freke’s Apprentice will station himself among the candles in the back, teaching Soul Arrow in exchange for 1000 Souls. The spell can also be learned from Sage Freke himself, but Soul Arrow isn’t worth the extra hassle.

Soul Ray

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

A spell exclusive to Sage Freke and his apprentices, Soul Ray is a stronger and faster version of Soul Arrow with much longer range. Soul Ray pierces through enemies outright, capable of hitting multiple foes at once. Coupled with a low MP cost, Soul Ray makes an already overpowered spell ferocious.

  • MP: 15
  • Slot Cost: 1

Soul Ray can only be learned by Sage Freke in the Nexus after he’s been rescued in the Tower of Latria with the Special Key (found near the boss arena.) Learning Soul Ray requires trading in the Doll Demon’s Souls, obtained by defeating the Fool’s Idol in 3-1.

Homing Soul Arrow

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Homing Soul Arrow is the best version of an already excellent spell. When cast, Homing Soul Arrow chases after targets in sight. Orbs spawn around the player which is responsible for maintaining the spell, making it difficult to use the spell to its fullest in tight spaces.

  • MP: 40
  • Slot Cost: 2
  • Duration: 2 Minutes

Homing Soul Arrow is learned from Sage Freke by giving him a Golden Demon Soul. The Golden Demon can be obtained by killing the Old Monk at the end of the Tower of Latria. Notably, the Old Monk’s champion uses Homing Soul Arrows to great effect during the battle.

Evacuate

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Demon’s Souls is an action game where you can’t really afford to be reckless. Even the weakest enemies can ruin your day if they catch you by surprise. Thankfully, there’s a spell that you can use in such cases called Evacuate to help you out of tight spots and protect your souls at the same time.

  • MP: 40
  • Slot Cost: 1
  • Duration: Instant

This spell has the exact same effect as an Archstone Shard and will warp you right back to the Nexus. Not only does this let you escape unwinnable situations, but it’s also quite useful for farming. However, be sure not to cast it right beside enemies. You can buy this spell from either the Disciple Of God or Saint Urbain for the price of 20,000 souls.

Protection

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

While outclassed by spells like Warding, Protection is a useful early game spell that reduces the player’s overall physical damage by 30 percent. Considering how difficult Demon’s Souls can be for newcomers, Protection can be the difference between life and death (against physical attacks).

  • MP: 20
  • Slot Cost: 1
  • Duration: 40 Seconds

Learned from Sage Freke or Freke’s Apprentice for 5,000 Souls, the high cost of this ability might discourage players from seeking out Protection early in their playthrough, but 5,000 Souls takes little to no time to grind up by mid-game.

Second Chance

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

An issue that makes Demon’s Souls difficult is that it tests your patience. Once you have to go through the same area for the fifth time, the frustration has built to the point where you start making careless or reckless decisions. When that happens, it’s good to have Second Chance in your roster.

  • MP: 100
  • Slot Cost: 2
  • Duration: Until Death

This Buff Miracle gives you an aura that allows you to come back from death with up to 50 percent of your health restored. This makes it particularly handy when attempting boss fights though keep in mind that it can’t be stacked on top of other buff spells. You can obtain it from Saint Urbain if you give him a Hero Demon Soul.

Warding

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

In spite of its high MP cost, Warding is one of the most useful spells in Demon’s Souls. Reducing physical damage by 70 percent, Warding is a phenomenal buff that can keep mages alive in the more demanding stages.

  • MP: 50
  • Slot Cost: 2
  • Duration: 40 Seconds

Warding is a high-level spell learned from Sage Freke by trading in the Iron Demon Souls – obtained by defeating Tower Knight at the end of 1-2. Warding is especially useful throughout 1-3 and most of the Valley of Defilement.

Water Veil

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

The Water Veil is in many respects Warding’s counterpart, offering 40 percent fire damage reduction rather than 70 percent physical. While the buff isn’t as potent, Water Veil is nonetheless the best means of preventing fire damage in-game and reasonably low cost mana-wise.

  • MP: 20
  • Slot Cost: 1
  • Duration: 60 Seconds

The Magician class actually begins the game with Water Veil equipped, but other classes can learn the spell from either Freke’s Apprentice or Sage Freke. Water Veil costs a measly 500 souls, turning Stonefang Tunnel in particular into a cakewalk. Water Veil is also useful for confronting the Red and Blue Dragons in 1-2 and 1-4 respectively.

Curse Weapon

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Curse Weapon is a risk/reward spell that greatly buffs a player’s physical offense at the expense of draining their health over time. When activated, Curse Weapon drains one percent of a player’s max health every second. With enough Grass on-hand, however, there’s little downside to relying on Curse Weapon as a buff.

  • MP: 100
  • Slot Cost: 3
  • Duration: 60 Seconds

Curse Weapon can only be learned from Yuria, the Witch. Yuria can be rescued in 1-2’s final watchtower if players head to the top while dressed in the full Fat Official’s set. Yuria will teach Curse Weapon in exchange for the Silver Demon’s Souls – found by defeating Penetrator in 1-3.

Cloak

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Cloak isn’t as bombastically useful as Soul Ray or Warding, but the spell can be the difference between life and death when at low health or simply exploring a treacherous area. Considering how many players opt to run through the Valley of Defilement to avoid all the dangerous enemies, Cloak can be any mage’s best friend.

  • MP: 10
  • Slot Cost: 1
  • Duration: 30 Seconds

Cloak is also useful for escaping invasions unscathed. The spell can be learned from either Sage Freke or his Apprentice in the Nexus for 500 souls. While not as useful as the Thief Ring, smart players can use Cloak to deliver backstab after backstab.

Relief

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Relief is one of the few healing spells in Demon’s Souls, but don’t get too excited. Relief fully restores the health of only your allies when playing online and does not work on the actual user whatsoever. Be sure to read Relief’s description carefully, otherwise ready up for disappointment.

  • MP: 18
  • Slot Cost: 2

Relief can be learned from Yuria by turning in the Pureblood Demon Soul (obtained by killing Maiden Astraea). Again, Relief only works online and only for party members. This does make it useful for summons, but keep in mind you’ll need to play a more defensive role to compensate.

Fireball

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

In the Souls universe, the School of Fire Magic is revered. Anyone who is able to master the art of Pyromancy will be well off in terms of power and ability to pose a threat to even the most powerful demons. Going down this route, you should add the classic Damage Spell of Fireball.

  • MP: 20
  • Slot Cost: 2
  • Duration Instant

As the name suggests, this spell allows you to launch a ball of fire in whatever direction you aim. The ball will explode against whatever it hits, can cause targets to stagger, and even deals splash damage to nearby enemies. You can learn to cast this spell from Sage Freke, The Visionary if you give him a Dragon Demon Soul.

Ignite

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock made a great point in that having the power of the sun in the palm of your hand would feel incredible. While you can’t wield the sun directly in Demon’s Souls, the Damage Spell of Ignite can get you pretty close with what it can do.

  • MP: 18
  • Slot Cost: 2
  • Duration: Instant

This spell works similar to a melee attack as it causes a burst of fire to emanate from your fingertips. This makes it much easier to aim, and it does over 30 percent more damage than Fireball. This spell has to be learned from Yuria, The Witch who will teach you in exchange for a Hard Demon Soul.

Fire Spray

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

While you explore the world of Demon’s Souls, you will come across many enemies that you’ll dread having to fight. Still, one of the most annoying are insect enemies that may be weak, but attack in swarms and can interrupt you back to back. The best way to get rid of bugs is bug spray and Fire Spray fills that role effectively.

  • MP: 2
  • Slot Cost: 1
  • Duration: Instant

You can wield this Damage Spell like a flamethrower which makes it ideal for crowd control and handling swarms of smaller enemies. You can cast it continuously and while moving around. To get this spell, you’ll need to visit Sage Freke, The Visionary, and give him a Hard Demon Soul.

Firestorm

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Firestorm is arguably the single most broken spell in Demon’s Souls, used by many the griefer online. An AoE attack that deals massive fire damage to everything in the caster’s vicinity, capable of killing most enemies and bosses in just a few short casts. Firestorm is also deadly in PvP.

  • MP: 100
  • Slot Cost: 3
  • Duration: 4.5 Seconds

Although Firestorm can be interrupted and its pills technically spawn in random locations, the sheer damage and reach of the spell more than makes up for any shortcomings. Firestorm can be learned by giving Yuria the Dragon Demon’s Souls – acquired by killing the Dragon God in 2-3.

Acid Cloud

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Acid Cloud is a spell that casts a miasma of thick acid that breaks down any weapons or armor that it comes in contact with. While Acid Cloud does work against regular enemies, it’s best used in PvP to grief other players and destroy their gear.

  • MP: 30
  • Slot Cost: 1
  • Duration: 4 – 6 Seconds

Acid Cloud can be learned from Sage Freke by handing over an Eroded Demon Soul. The Eroded Demon Souls is obtained by killing the Dirty Colossus in 5-2. While the Dirty Colossus himself is an easy boss, the Swamp of Sorrow is one of the hardest areas in Demon’s Souls.

Poison Cloud

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Poison Cloud is a spell that generates a thick cloud of purple smoke that deals a grand total of 905 Poison damage to enemies. Poison Cloud deals damage over time and is especially useful for humanoid bosses (and even Flamelurker).

  • MP: 15
  • Slot Cost: 1
  • Duration: 4 – 6 Seconds

Poison Cloud’s poison effect lasts for 3 minutes, more than enough time to do some serious damage. Poison Cloud can be learned from Sage Freke by exchanging a Withering Demon Soul. The Withering Demon Soul can be obtained by killing Leechmonger in 5-1.

Death Cloud

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

It’s almost jarring just how useful Death Cloud is. The spell casts a cloud of Plague that infects any enemies who walk through it, draining their health for 10 minutes. The crazy thing about Death Cloud is that it actually works on bosses, and it’s the go-to strategy for defeating the game’s super boss: Old King Doran.

  • MP: 30
  • Slot Cost: 2
  • Duration: 10 Minutes

Death Cloud can be learned by Sage Freke in exchange for the Pureblood Demon’s Souls. Getting the souls means defeating Maiden Astraea, the Archdemon of the Valley of Defilement, which unfortunately means most players will obtain Death Cloud closer to the end of the game. Regardless, that’s when the spell is arguably at its most useful.

Soul Thirst

Demon’s Souls PS5 Spells Every Mage Should Learn Right Away

Demon’s Souls isn’t as generous when it comes to grinding as Dark Souls or Bloodborne. There aren’t many enemies that drop high quantities of souls and most players will be relying on the souls they receive from bosses to just to level up come end-game. Soul Thirst helps quite a bit in this regard, increasing the amount of souls players receive by 50 percent.

  • MP: 200
  • Slot Cost: 3
  • Duration: 20 Seconds

Soul Thirst is another spell taught by Yuria, this time by exchanging the Yellow Demon’s Souls – gotten by defeating the Old Monk’s champion at the end of 3-3. Soul Thirst only works for half a minute, but stacks with the Ring of Avarice, the Silver Bracelets, and Soulsucker.

Soulsucker

On the subject of Soulsucker, the spell is only used in-game by False King Allant – de-leveling the player when making contact. Should players get the good ending by sparing the Maiden in Black, they’ll begin the next cycle with her soul in their inventory. After rescuing Yuria again, trade in the Maiden in Black’s Demon’s Souls for Soulsucker.

  • MP: 100
  • Slot Cost: 3

When used against enemies, Soulsucker rewards double the number of souls awarded (making the Ring of Avarice, Silver Bracelets, and Soul Thirst combo particularly deadly). Against other players, Soulsucker decreases their highest leveled stat by one. While Soulsucker’s reach is incredibly short, its benefits are too good to ignore.
