Legendary Shards are one of Destiny 2’s main forms of currency. Obtained from dismantling Legendary and Exotic-rarity gear, Legendary Shards are needed to do virtually anything. They’re commonly used to purchase Upgrade Modules, Masterwork materials, and obtain certain items such as Trials Passages.

No matter how often you interact with Destiny 2, you will need a stockpile of Legendary Shards to have a smooth experience. Fortunately, there are quite a few ways of obtaining Legendary Shards—most of which aren’t tied to farming any activities. Whether you’re new or a long-time veteran, these are the best ways of obtaining Legendary Shards in Destiny 2.

Updated August 15th, 2021, by Charles Burgar: With a new season right around the corner, now is the perfect time to stock up on Legendary Shards and other valuable resources. We’ve updated this guide with new tips, strategies, and overall recommendations on how you can obtain as many Legendary Shards as possible. Remember to clean out your Vault, redeem any Legendary Engrams rewards from vendors, and use Prosperity mods on your Ghost Shell.

Clean Out Your Vault

By far the fastest way of earning Legendary Shards for veteran players is to clean out your Vault. Most players stockpile weapons and armor as they play Destiny 2 in hopes of using them in the future. This rarely happens, causing some players to have Vaults that are almost full.

Every weapon and armor piece you dismantle is worth three Legendary Shards, four if you have the paid Season Pass and are a high enough level. Dismantling 300 weapons and armor pieces from your Vault would yield 900 Legendary Shards—1,200 if you own the current season. Considering how frequently Destiny 2 hands out Legendaries, most players can do this once or twice a season to obtain a stockpile of Legendary Shards.

Dismantle Shaders

In a similar vein to your Vault, there’s a good chance that you have a stockpile of Shaders that you aren’t using. Every Legendary Shader in Destiny 2 dismantles into one Legendary Shard when dismantled. That doesn’t sound like much, but many players have hundreds of Shaders sitting in their inventory.

If that is the case, visit Rahool in the Tower. He will be able to dismantle five Shaders at a time instead of the standard one, saving you a few minutes of dismantling items by hand. Note that they must be perfect stacks of five for Rahool to dismantle them; any Shader stacks below five won’t appear in this menu. Once Rahool has dismantled most of your Shaders, open your inventory to dismantle the rest.

Redeem Vendor Packages

Completing activities in Destiny 2 will increase your reputation with specific vendors. As you increase your rank with a vendor, you’ll be able to claim certain rewards. Masterwork Materials, Upgrade Modules, and Engrams are just a few things you can claim from these vendors.

Every rank will grant one Legendary Engram you can claim, granting one piece of Legendary Gear. You can then dismantle this item for three Legendary Shards—four if you own that current season. Since all core vendors have a rank-up system, you should be able to obtain hundreds of Legendary Engrams this way each season.

Umbral Engrams

Certain activities and enemies have a chance of dropping an Umbral Engram. This type of Engram behaves similarly to a Legendary Engram, albeit these can be focused to grant specific items. Whenever you get an Umbral Engram, head to the H.E.L.M. to decrypt it. This will always grant a piece of Legendary gear, which you can then dismantle for Legendary Shards.

Banshee-44 Packages

Gunsmith Materials can be turned in to Banshee-44 in the Tower for Gunsmith Packages. Each package costs 100 Gunsmith Materials and guarantees a weapon. Most of these packages also come with a Shader, which can also be dismantled for Legendary Shards. Every single weapon and armor piece you dismantle will grant Gunsmith Materials, so there’s a high probability that you have a massive stockpile of these in your inventory or Vault if you’ve been playing for a while.

Purchase Shards From The Spider

The Spider can sometimes sell Legendary Shards at the Tangled Shore. Shards purchased this way will vary in price, as the Spider’s stock changes daily. In general, they will either cost 10,000 Glimmer or five random planetary materials for a set of five Legendary Shards. Veteran players with tons of resources should consider visiting the Spider on occasion to see if they can turn their stockpile of resources into Legendary Shards.

Season Pass Perks

The premium track of the Season Pass always contains a Legendary Shard Dismantle Bonus at rank 20, causing all weapons and armor to grant an additional Legendary Shard when dismantled. In other words, Legendary gear grants four Legendary Shards. Exotic gear dismantles into six Legendary Shards.

In addition, the Season Pass also grants Legendary weapons and armor at certain Season Pass ranks. While it’s advised to use these rewards to even out your Power Level as you’re leveling, they can also be used as dismantling fodder.

Legendary Shards are also awarded in sets of 25 at certain Season Pass ranks. Those ranks are the following:

Farm Strikes Or Crucible

If you have no stockpiles of resources or Season Pass items ready to claim, the final thing you can do is farm activities that grant a ton of Legendary items as rewards. Seasonal activities are typically a good means of obtaining Legendaries, although this varies from season to season.

Fortunately, there are two game modes you can always rely on that grant a solid amount of Legendary items: Vanguard Strikes and Crucible. Strikes are recommended for virtually every player. They’re easy to do, don’t take much time to complete, and almost always grant a Legendary item at the end. When combined with Vanguard Tokens and Season Pass perks, you should be getting a steady income of Legendary Shards for little effort.

Alternatively, Crucible is a solid game mode for earning Legendary gear if you can stay on a Win Streak. Every Valor and Glory rank increase will grant a Legendary weapon or armor piece, further increasing your Legendary Shard income. This is atop the Legendary gear you obtain from end-of-match rewards.

Whichever activity you plan to farm, remember to equip Prosperity Mod on your Ghost Shell. This Mod has a chance to grant additional Legendary gear whenever you complete an activity, further boosting your Legendary Shard gains. Note that you’ll need a Masterworked Ghost Shell to equip this Mod since it’s tied to the fourth Mod slot.
