The Witch Queen is coming, and not just in the figurative sense. She’s literally coming to wipe humanity out in Season 16 of Destiny 2.

As shown in The Witch Queen video documentary, Season of the Risen will not only bring Savathun back from the dead, she’ll also bestow the Light amongst her Lucent Brood. With these undead Hive at her disposal, Savathun launches an invasion of Earth that could spell the end of everything.

To beat back the Lucent Brood, Zavala calls on Cabal Empress Caitl for help. During Season of the Chosen, you’ll recall that Zavala brokers a peace treaty with the Cabal after they arrived in-system and attacked the Hive and humanity alike. A mutual enemy makes for strange bedfellows, and Zavala and Caitl have a begrudging respect, but will that translate into a larger alliance between both beleaguered peoples?

You can tell in the brief snippets of cutscenes shown in the vidoc that not everyone is on board with the plan to enlist the Cabal to defend against the Lucent Brood, but they have one thing that humanity desperately needs. The Cabal have developed anti-Light technology that deactivates Light-based abilities and could be used to make the Lucent Brood vulnerable. It might be humanity’s only hope for defeating Savathun.

Well, that and the Guardians of course. Those who purchase The Witch Queen expansion will be able to invade Savathun’s Throne World to try and defeat the God of Deceit herself. As is customary with Destiny 2’s seasons, the fight against the Lucent Brood on Earth (and probably the Moon, judging by the vidoc) will be free for all players.

The Cabal theme fits with one of the new Exotic weapons coming in Witch Queen. The Grand Overture will be a new Exotic that is essentially a giant Cabal machine gun that fires a stream of slugs. New Cabal-themed cosmetics are also represented in the documentary, including armor and a Ghost shell.

Season of the Risen and The Witch Queen expansion both arrive on February 22.
