Destiny 2s Leviathan’s Breath Quest Is Too Emotional For Some Players (And Us)

Destiny 2’s latest exotic quest is really too much for some players as the game’s gunsmith, Banshee-44, can’t help but beckon sadness.

The Leviathan’s Breath Quest requires the forgetful NPC robot to tell players to get a certain bit of information from the deceased Cayde-6 – his death in itself was pretty sad too as it felt all too real – and it’s really bumming everyone out.

Players who completed the Forsaken campaign and all of its quests will remember getting put through some stern tests by Banshee in order to recover and calibrate Cayde’s Ace of Spades hand cannon.

Like Cayde, the gunsmith is an Exo – in Destiny, that means someone who has had his/her consciousness transferred to a robot shell. The number at the end of their name represents the number of times they’ve had to go through a reboot.

Most Exos start to fade after around 20 reboots; Cayde only had to do it six times but Banshee’s had to 44 times, something which causes him to be forgetful at times. Walking up to him in the Tower could put you through hearing him regret his forgetfulness and promise not to forget the ones he’s lost over the years. Banshee knows that Cayde is dead – he’s the one who hands you the Ace when you complete all the quest steps, but it’s difficult for him to remember all the time and he’s been known to ask Guardians if they’ve come across the humorous Hunter Exo.

The new exotic quest requires players to have a chat with Banshee and he will discuss a new, powerful bow he’s working on. He asks that players head to his secret workshop in the Tower to pick it up. The quest that follows sees him give more detail into the story and notes that Cayde should be able to say where it is.

Of course, Guardians are left to find the workshop on their own as Cayde’s not around, plus Leviathan’s Breath is behind a locked case that Banshee’s misplaced the keys for. All of this has left players feeling pretty sorry for poor Banshee, with some taking to Reddit to lament.

“My mom died of brain cancer 7 years ago. She had moments like this and it tore me up inside,” a user going by the name Vyrrk wrote. “When Banshee says this stuff it hit me hard every time!”

“As an employee working in a senior community with two memory care wards this definitely hits me hard. I’ve had to reintroduce myself to some residents 50+ times,” Grizzlyroach said. “Banshee, come live here so I can take care of you!”

Another user called Zarbain wrote: “Sadly we don’t have the lore of why, just the depressing stories of him losing his memories and that his memory systems are straight up f***ed at this point. The usual reason for doing the memory resets is to stop the exo body and the mind from rejecting each other so likely he is not compatible with his body but can’t fix it either.”

It’s not hard to imagine this hitting players hard if they’ve had to watch family members or loved ones go through Alzheimer’s or other diseases that have an effect on memory. Even though Banshee’s a fictional robot, he gets our pity too.
