Netflix subscribers in the UK will be able to watch Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog later this month.
There has been a stigma attached to movies based on video games for a very long time, and it’s probably justified. It can probably be traced back to the Super Mario movie from the early ’90s. The film was about as far removed from a faithful adaptation from the games as it possibly could be. Fast forward almost 30 years and the movie industry has turned that ship around.
So much so that Hollywood is having another crack at moving Mario to the big screen. Don’t panic, this time the movie will be animated and an all-star cast will be voicing familiar faces from the Mushroom Kingdom. It’s still more than a year until the Mario movie hits theaters, but in the meantime, Netflix has you covered on the video game movies front.
Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog will both be available to watch on Netflix in the UK before the end of this month. Detective Pikachu, featuring a Ryan Reynolds-voiced Pikachu, arrives on the platform on November 16. Sonic will speed onto the streaming service 11 days later on November 27. Both are partly responsible for flipping the opinion of video game movies in recent years.
Detective Pikachu is actually based on a lesser-known Pokemon spin-off game on the 3DS. The movie pulls from that while packing in as many Pokemon as it can, appealing to hardened trainers and also casual fans who might not have played the games for a number of years. Sonic’s success was the bigger surprise of the two though, especially after Paramount revealed the original design for the movie version of the hedgehog.
Its release was delayed so that the design could be tweaked and the final Sonic was far closer to the one fans are familiar with. Sonic the Hedgehog hit theaters right before the world went into lockdown, breaking video game movie records in the process. It performed so well that it will get a sequel starring Idris Elba as Knuckles. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently slated to hit theaters in April 2022, which might explain why it is coming to Netflix in a few weeks.
