A sequel to the Detective Pikachu game released on Nintendo 3DS has been officially announced for the Nintendo Switch.

There is a long history of video games not making good movies, and movies not making good video games. Detective Pikachu might well have brought an end to that trend. At the very least, it has bucked it. The Pokémon movie had a better opening weekend in theaters than any other video game adaptation that has come before it.

Many who have seen the movie might assume that Detective Pikachu has been dubbed a video game adaptation due to one of Pokémon’s main revenue streams being through video games. As a matter of fact, there is an actual, very entertaining Detective Pikachu video game that was released for Nintendo 3DS in 2016. The game and the movie share a lot of similarities.

We have some extremely good news for fans of the game and the movie. The 2016 3DS title is getting a sequel, reports IGN – not a remake or a remaster of the first game, but a genuine sequel. What makes that good news even better is the fact that the original game ended on a massive cliffhanger. We may now finally get an answer to that painfully annoying ending.

The game actually ends in a similar, but also very different, fashion to the movie. (Look away now if you don’t want spoilers for either.) In the movie, Pikachu is revealed to be the physical vessel for Tim Goodman’s father, Harry. In the game, this is only hinted at. Mewtwo asks Pikachu if he has “decided on which one to choose.” Pikachu answers yes, but it is not revealed what this means exactly.

Before the game ends, Mewtwo also tells Tim that his father is still alive. If the Switch sequel will indeed follow on from that story and moment, we could well get hints as to what a Detective Pikachu movie sequel might look like. Whether that’s the case or not, we will definitely be playing. Anything to do with Pokémon right now has got us throwing our money at whoever is responsible.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
