According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, some of the developers at Avalanche Studio responsible for the unannounced (but basically confirmed) Harry Potter RPG are concerned by author J.K. Rowling’s most recent anti-trans comments made on social media. For those unaware, the famous British author recently came under fire for her denial of trans-rights and some other gross language she used to describe people of the LGBTQ+ community. Avalanche is worried that negative perception of her words will translate over to its title.

Rowling doesn’t have any direct involvement with this new game, alleges the report, but the brand is still something she created and cultivated over the years. Her continuation of it with spin-off novels, stage plays, and films has many understandably conflicted about how they view the brand. It’s hard to think Harry Potter and not think Rowling.

With all of that negativity stemming from Rowling’s online presence, sales of the new game may be directly affected. Felicia Grady, the managing editor of Harry Potter fansite MuggleNet, even told Schreier, “Based on what I’ve seen from fans, I do believe that Rowling’s comments have had some effect on the level of excitement they have for the Harry Potter RPG or other upcoming content. We’ve seen comments from fans who no longer wish to support Rowling or the brand financially.”

Another factor looming over this title is the potential sale of WB Interactive. Some rumors recently began spreading that WB was looking to offload its gaming division, which includes a number of popular brands and studios -chiefly, NetherRealm Studios-. With uncertainty around not only the Harry Potter brand but the future of WB Interactive, this unannounced Harry Potter game may end up getting shelved. Matthew Kanterman, a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst, believes as much.

At the moment, WB is gearing up to talk about its new Batman project (likely a Suicide Squad game) in August. The Harry Potter title is scheduled to be revealed sometime after that. If perception around Rowling and Harry Potter doesn’t change in the immediate future, there’s a chance this title won’t see the light of day.
