While some have questioned the need for Dexter: New Blood, the reboot proved itself worthy with one incredible line about the serial killer’s return. While reboots, revivals, and remakes of older TV shows are becoming the norm—And Just Like That…, Gossip Girl, MacGyver, Dynasty, Roseanne—very few have actually proven why it’s important that the material be revisited. Dexter: New Blood, on the other hand, had an important mission: to fix where the original series went wrong in Dexter’s hated, mystery-leaving season 8 finale.

Even though Dexter: New Blood had a significant, justifiable reason to bring back Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan and begin killing again, it still had the difficult task of bringing viewer excitement and trust back to the series. Dexter’s season 8 finale left off with the entire premise of the original diminished, as the titular character abandoned his life in Miami, quit serial killing, and lived as an isolated lumberjack in Oregon. New Blood episode 1 updated viewers on Dexter’s life over the past decade while finally showing him back in action as a serial killer, but it wasn’t until the twist ending of New Blood episode 6 that the reboot truly proved itself to be just as great, if not more exciting, than the original series.

While viewers, Deb, and Harrison all knew Dexter Morgan’s true identity, one aspect of New Blood felt off for the first half—namely that he was almost always referred to as “Jim Lindsay.” To be fair, this is the only name that the residents of Iron Lake knew him by, but he still felt like a different version of the character. Then, finally, at the end of New Blood episode 5, Angela discovered that Jim Lindsay has actually been Dexter the entire time. This is where New Blood truly found its stride as Julia Jones’ Angela delivered a line that immediately transported viewers back into the original show’s heyday: “I don’t need Jim. I need Dexter Morgan.”

At this moment, Dexter: New Blood confirmed that the reboot would fully bring back the old Dexter, not the Jim Lindsay Iron Laker that he had pretended to be. Angela’s line about needing Dexter Morgan, not Jim, is also how most Dexter viewers had felt the entire series, as they patiently waited for the moment when the lovable serial killer they knew would fully return. This was one of the most exciting moments of Dexter: New Blood since the original series, as it signaled that Dexter would be able to bring back one of his most significant talents of investigating homicides by analyzing crime scenes and the bodies. He’s no longer doing his own private investigation on the Runaway Killer, as Angela has now recruited the renowned Dexter Morgan to finally assist in the hunt with his expert forensics skills.

Although the context of Angela’s line about needing Dexter Morgan deals with his forensics skills, the subtext of the quote appeals to another sensibility of the character – she’ll eventually need him to kill Kurt Caldwell. It’s already been theorized that Angela will ask Dexter to kill Kurt, and this is the sort of validation that Dexter has been seeking all his life. Even hinted at by Harrison being lauded as a hero for cutting Ethan, Dexter’s season 1 finale fantasy imagined him walking through a crowd of cheering fans for putting down dangerous serial killers. Dexter Morgan is officially back in Dexter: New Blood, and the reboot ups the stakes by using his skills to take down the Runaway Killer.
