Warning: Contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood episode 3.

The identity of the Dexter: New Blood killer remains the show’s biggest mystery after episode 3. While the big question for the season finale of Dexter: New Blood is what will finally happen to Dexter after viewers were upset by the controversial original ending, the focus at this point of the show is who the Dexter: New Blood killer actually is. There have been a lot of clues and theories, and while some don’t hold up to scrutiny, there are several that do.

A decade after the end of Dexter saw Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) fake his own death and move to Oregon, Dexter: New Blood sees the killer working his routine in the small town of Iron Lake. While he has gone all of that time without a kill and pushes past worrying about the spate of disappearances in the area, he is drawn back in by Matt Caldwell (Steve M. Robertson). His father, Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown) is insistent on the search continuing for Matt, but eventually calls it off after claiming that the definitely-dead Matt had FaceTimed him.

If Dexter: New Blood follows the Dexter formula, it is likely that Dexter will discover the identity of the serial killer mid-way or two-thirds of the way through the season and the conflict will resolve towards the end. This still leaves at least several episodes before viewers might get a concrete answer to the central mystery. In the meantime, here is every theory so far as to who the killer is in Dexter: New Blood.

Dexter Morgan/Jim Lindsay

Dexter New Blood Who Is The Killer Every Theory So Far

Dexter Morgan is the central serial killer to the franchise and the audience usually sees his kills; however, it is possible that his ten years without a kill isn’t all that it seems. Dexter’s mental state has always been a little questionable as he deals with his Dark Passenger and is a sociopathic serial killer. It’s possible that during his time in Iron Lake, Dexter has snapped and started killing again but has disassociated from that identity after the trauma of blaming himself for Debra Morgan’s (Jennifer Carpenter) death in Dexter season 8.

This could mean that Dexter himself is the secret Dexter: New Blood killer. The killer is shown to kill his victims and then drain their blood in a very similar way to Brian Moser, AKA the Ice Truck Killer from Dexter season 1, who was revealed to be Dexter’s biological brother. If he had a form of mental break, then he might have picked up some of those methods of operation for his killing in Dexter: New Blood. There are some problems with this theory though. Picking primarily on teen girls does not really fit with Dexter’s MO, which likes to target people who he feels deserve it. Also, if he was unconsciously killing, then Deb as his Dark Passenger would know about it and there would be some clues in her dialogue, which there have not been. Finally, during Dexter: New Blood episode 3, “Smoke Signals,” Dexter hears the gunshot of the hunter killing Lily while he is otherwise occupied. After that scene, having Dexter being revealed as the serial killer would be unfair to the audience.

Harrison Morgan

Dexter New Blood Who Is The Killer Every Theory So Far

Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott), Dexter’s own son, has already proved himself as having a darker history that allows him to pick locks and a more violent side that leaves him able to choke one of the jocks that picks on Ethan. Dexter has always feared that he might have passed his “darkness” on to Harrison, and the possibility that he might be a killer in Dexter: New Blood is definitely hinted at. Importantly, Harrison has a very similar moral compass to Dexter in which he sees that people shouldn’t treat others poorly (hence defending Ethan in a similar way to Dexter protecting people from other killers), but his response to that is often outside of what others would consider correct. This theory doesn’t really hold up to scrutiny based on timelines. Harrison has only just arrived in Iron Lake and nobody in the town appears to recognize him, but teenagers have been going missing in the area when traveling through for some time.

Kurt Caldwell

An extremely popular theory points to the identity of the Dexter: New Blood serial killer being Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown) himself. He is set up as an antagonist to Dexter by his aggressive nature and push to find Matt when Dexter wishes to keep his body hidden. He’s a rich man who lives a solitary life and appears to appreciate hunting, based on the pictures in his house and his son’s own attitude to hunting for sport. He also has a disregard for people who are not his own kin.

Additionally, in Dexter: New Blood episode 3, the audience gets to see the serial killer preparing for and executing his kill. This gives a lot of evidence for who the serial killer might be and includes signs that he is an older man who has a knowledge of hunting. This also comes after Kurt is seen arguing with Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) about the search and could be his own sick version of stress relief. At the end of the episode, Kurt tells Dexter that he has had the search called off and that he knows Matt is alive because they faced time. While Dexter knows this can’t be exactly true, he is unsure why Kurt would lie. It is possible that Kurt is lying so that the search will get called off before it finds any hint of his own killing, especially as Angela has indicated how far out she will search and he seems concerned by that information. The only point against this theory is that it seems unlikely that he would push so hard for a police search if he himself was killing in the area, but that might be explained by his calling off of the search when he learns it might encroach on his own killing fields or body dump.

Edward Olsen

One Dexter: New Blood character who has received less attention is also a prime candidate for being the Iron Lake serial killer. Edward Olsen (Fredric Lehne) is the oil tycoon that is the subject of Audrey’s (Johnny Sequoyah) protests. His appearance and build also fits the images seen during the Dexter: New Blood episode 3 murder scene just as Kurt Caldwell’s does. He is well off and sees himself as above the law in some ways and as a billionaire who is unrepentantly contributing to climate change for profit, he makes perfect sense for a modern-day villain. As he seems to have a strong connection to the Iron Lake Tavern, it might be possible for him to easily hear about young lone women passing through the town.

While he has had relatively little screen time in comparison to the other suspects, Edward Olsen has some compelling evidence against him. During Dexter: New Blood episode 3, there are 3 songs that play that are notably older than all the rest and come from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s. The first is “Runaway” by Del Shannon from 1961 that the serial killer plays on vinyl as he prepares to murder Lily. The second is “All I Have To Do Is Dream” by The Everly Brothers from 1958, which plays while the killer washes Lily’s body and drains it of blood. The final one is the 1965 song “My Heart Can Feel The Pain” by The Tonettes which plays briefly and faintly from Edward Olsen’s car as he gets out when Audrey has broken down. These musical clues seem crucial to the serial killer’s identity in Dexter: New Blood and are supported by the final one coming as Olsen offers Audrey the opportunity to sit in his car while on a deserted road, an action that could have been preparation to kidnap and kill her and amounted to offering her “free candy.” Finally, if he wanted to get the search called off, he might have had the resources to create a fake facetime call between Matt Caldwell and his father using deep fakes or something similar.

The Town of Iron Lake

While there are several individuals who might be behind the murders, there could be a darker conspiracy at work. In Dexter: New Blood episode 1, “Cold Snap,” Angela Bishop has a board that shows a lot of women have gone missing in the area. Additionally, the disappearance of Iris, Angela’s teenage friend, suggests that something like this has been going on for a long time. However, other than the Native American community, nobody in the show seems to be massively concerned about this.

In a small town like Dexter: New Blood’s Iron Lake mass disappearances of people passing through the town would likely be worthy of at least gossip, if not more. However, the town appears to get on with their days cheerfully. This might suggest that the town is aware of the killings and potentially who is doing them. This could suggest that it is one of the billionaires who pays off certain parts of the town to turn their backs. More compelling, however, is the fact that Dexter: New Blood has already put a lot of weight behind symbolic images like the white deer. If Iron Lake is aware of the killings, then it could be more of a The Wicker Man situation where the town believes that the killings are in some way necessary. If this is the case, it will have interesting implications for Dexter at the end of the season as to what moral choice he makes and whether he might have found an oddly welcoming home or have to turn the town (and himself) in.

Ultimately, the solution to the identity of the serial killer in Dexter: New Blood will likely come from what is being done with the bodies and why the killer drains them of blood and preserves them with formaldehyde. The song that plays as the killer murders Lily is about a man whose love left him, and if the bodies are being staged in a creepy fashion as stand-ins for a lost love, it will likely rely on who has a history of being hung up on a past relationship. Alternatively, if the bodies are simply disposed of or are being used ritualistically, then the Dexter: New Blood killer will be tied to something else.
