Michael C. Hall revealed strange memorabilia requests among Dexter fans: signed kitchen knives. It’s an odd, if not entirely irrelevant, ask, given the show’s gruesome subject matter. Hall starred as the title serial killer on Dexter, which originally premiered on Showtime in 2006. The series followed Dexter Morgan, a Miami-based blood spatter analyst who moonlighted as a murderer, until the finale in 2013.

Now, Dexter is rebooting for a ninth season on Showtime. Titled Dexter: New Blood, the new season is set to take place ten years after the finale, during which time Dexter left sunny Miami for the chillier environs of upstate New York. He also has a new name and a new life, having left the world of crime scene investigations to work as a sales associate at Fred’s Fish & Game. Dexter may have adopted a new lifestyle, but it is unlikely he will be able to stave off his predilection for bloodlust.

While doing press for Dexter: New Blood, Hall recalled his fans’ grisly autograph requests, with strangers hoping that the actor would ink their kitchen knives. Hall admitted he stopped indulging the request for fear of fans going too far to emulate the sinister character. Check out Hall’s full quote below, courtesy of EW:

“It was just weird, meeting strangers and having them ask if I would pretend I was killing them while they took photos. And I’ve signed a lot of knives. A lot of people will come out with knives from their kitchen. I’ve stopped doing that in part, because I worry that somebody will commit a crime. I don’t know. Can you get in trouble if you sign the murder weapon?”

Fortunately for fans who fell in love with Dexter’s macabre premise, the reboot appears to be reviving the show’s dark tone. Jennifer is returning as Deb Morgan, Dexter’s sister, as a sort of specter, not unlike Dexter’s father, Harry. The forthcoming season will also feature a number of new faces, including Clancy Brown as the central villain, Kurt Caldwell as the unofficial mayor of the upstate community, and Julia Jones as Dexter’s love interest. Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, Michael Cyril Creighton, Jack Alcott, and Jamie Chung will also be joining season 9.

In addition to moving the series to the northeast and introducing a new slew of characters, Dexter: New Blood will have a different sense of pacing than the original series. Season 9’s ten-episode run will reportedly take place over the span of two weeks. The reboot will also focus more on Dexter’s family rather than the assortment of criminals that Dexter used to hunt down each week. These significant changes seem to mark an effort to separate the new season from the old ones, instead aiming for New Blood to exist as a standalone entity. Hall just about confirmed as much, stating that the Dexter reboot exists to provide closure after the show’s poorly received series finale. What will result is a season of television that will hopefully capture the tone and spirit of a beloved series while also serving as a standalone piece of new storytelling within the Dexter universe. The new season will debut on Showtime on Sunday, Nov. 7th at 9 p.m. ET.
