While Disney released a live-action version of The Lion King in 2019, it’s hard to beat the original.

Disney’s animated film, which tells of a young lion who must return to Pride Rock to reclaim his throne, released in 1994. The musical featured a memorable soundtrack, rich animation, and compelling characters, all which have helped cement The Lion King as a classic. However, if you rewatch the film, you might notice a few details that don’t add up. We’re here to dive into these now.

Before we get started, we’re noting that yes, we’re going to get picky here. While The Lion King doesn’t have to explain every last thing that happens throughout the film (it is fiction after all), it’s far more fun to dive into the details.

It’s time to head to the Pride Lands; Here are ten things that don’t make sense about The Lion King.

10 Why Wasn’t Mufasa More Suspicious Of Scar?

Scar had always been envious of Mufasa’s power, and Mufasa knew it. Scar failed to show when Rafiki presented Simba to the animals, and in the meantime, he seemed to be scheming. So why didn’t Mufasa banish him earlier?

It’s an even bigger crime that Mufasa allowed Simba to hang out with his uncle in the first place. It would have saved Mufasa a lot of heartache had he taken care of Scar the right way.

9 Why Was Simba Bethrothed To Nala?

Zazu informs Simba and Nala at a young age that they are betrothed to one another. However, the movie never explains why.

Is there some reason Simba must choose Nala instead of another lioness? Does she have royal blood?

It’s rather convenient that she happens to be his best friend and later shows up when Simba is most needed as an adult.

8 Zazu Should Have Died On Multiple Occasions

Zazu gets beat up all the time. We especially see this happening while Simba is still young.

Scar puts Zazu fully in his mouth as if he’s about to eat him, Mufasa teaches Simba how to pounce on Zazu, and during “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” Zazu is crushed by a massive Rhino. They say cats have nine lives, but now it seems birds do, too.

7 How Did Mufasa Know Simba Went To Elephant Graveyard?

Mufasa instructs Simba to never go to the Elephant Graveyard, but Scar gets the lion cub curious. This causes him to bring Nala there.

A group of hyenas threatens Simba upon his arrival, but thankfully, Mufasa is there to scare them off. However, it’s never explained how Mufasa knew the kids were headed to the Elephant Graveyard. Zazu is with the lion cubs and Scar wanted Simba to get hurt. No one else could have told him where they were headed.

If Mufasa was lingering behind Simba, he would have had to do so for a while since Simba first stopped at the watering hole for a song.

6 The Hyenas Have A Point

The Lion King never really explains what’s so wrong with the hyenas. Sure, they’re creepy and willing to do whatever Scar says, but does that make them bad?

All the hyenas want is food, and Scar’s the one who feeds them. You can’t blame the hyenas for going along with the plans of a lion who wants to keep them alive. Mufasa never shows this kind of care.

5 Why Can Only Some Animals Communicate?

In classic Disney fashion, some of the animals can talk and act like humans while others give in to a more traditional animalistic nature.

Simba, Timone, Pumbaa, and even the hippos know how to sing and dance. Why then, do the wildebeests continue to stampede despite seeing Simba and Mufasa in their way? One of them could say something like, “Hold up, friends! The king of the Pride Lands is here!” Instead, they continue to follow their instincts and charge forward without a care.

4 Why Didn’t The Lionesses Question Simba’s And Mufasa’ Deaths?

After Mufasa’s death, Scar informs the lionesses that their leader and his son have passed. They instantly believe him, despite Scar, as aforementioned, not having a great reputation.

Shouldn’t the lionesses have questioned where the bodies were? While they could have come across Mufasa’s, wouldn’t they have found it odd for Simba’s to be missing? Mufasa was a king, after all. You’d think they’d have looked further into the overly convenient deaths of the king and his direct successor.

3 How Did Rafiki Know Simba Was Alive?

Years after Simba had supposedly been murdered, Rafiki catches a handful of leaves and white… things floating through the air. He smells it and all of the sudden realizes that Simba is alive, but how?

Some have suggested that the white floaty things were Simba’s hair and that Rafiki recognized Simba’s scent. Others have used “magic” as an explanation for Rafiki’s sudden realization. Nevertheless, the evidence he uses to confirm Simba’s existence is poorly explained.

2 Why Did Mufasa Take So Long To Show Up In The Clouds?

After Rafiki finds Simba, he convinces the lion that his father is still around. Simba sees his father in his own reflection in the water, and soon, Mufasa even speaks to him through the clouds in the sky.

Is this just a figment of Simba’s imagination, or is Mufasa actually appearing to him? If it’s truly Mufasa, what took him so long? Why didn’t he come for Simba far earlier and explain that his death was caused by Scar? Simba had been living with a lifetime of guilt, so why was Mufasa holding out on him?

1 Why Did The Lions Blame The Drought On Scar?

When Simba heads back to Pride Rock, he discovers that his home has been struck with drought. The lionesses seem to blame Scar for this, but why? He doesn’t have control over the weather.

Strangely enough, when Simba becomes king, the drought goes away; The Pride Lands become beautiful and lush once again. Was sky-Mufasa using some sort of magic to encourage his son to return home? Does nature just conveniently follow the feelings of its inhabitants? Perhaps we’ll never know.
